Economic Roundtable at Martin Guitar

Senator Bob Casey held an economic roundtable at Martin Guitar according to an article in the Express-Times (read it here).

In the article it states, “He [Casey] touted the local impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Of the $787 billion provided by the act, $16 billion went to Pennsylvania. More than $23 million went to Northampton County school districts and $50 million went to county transportation and infrastructure improvements.”

I’m somewhat surprised that Casey would “tout” the money PA received when it is 2% of the total.  For one of the larger states in the country it would seem we should have received a larger share.

I also don’t understand how sending $23M to our school districts assists with economic recovery.

Nazareth Man Pleads Guilty in Fed Court

The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia distributed a press announcement regarding a Nazareth man, Robert E. Atwood, 52, who plead guilty to scheming to defraud Alexandria-based AvalonBay Communities, Inc.

According to court documents, from about 2001 and continuing until January 2007, Atwood agreed with an official of Draeger Construction, Inc., that Draeger would pay Atwood a kickback based upon the amount of AvalonBay business that was awarded to Draeger Construction through no-bid contracts for work in California. According to the plan, Atwood and the Draeger official agreed that the kickback would be implemented by making Atwood’s wife, Tiffany Atwood, a ghost employee on the payroll of Draeger Construction. As a result of the scheme, by the time AvalonBay had terminated Atwood’s employment, Tiffany Atwood had received approximately $300,000 in what appeared to be salary from Draeger Construction.

And the release also notes, “A copy of this press release may be found on the website of the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/vae. Related court documents and information may be found on the website of the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia at http://www.vaed.uscourts.gov or on http://pacer.uspci.uscourts.gov.”
