As an adult in Nazareth, I have seen many instances of hostility, both open and not, toward youth in this town. If we are a close small town, then we need to reach out and embrace this demographic as warmly as we embrace the younger children. They are ours, too. Many adults may find teen behaviors objectionable, but being a teenager, or even being anti-establishment does not make you a liabilty to the community. Everyone goes through that stage, and many of those people go on to constructive, even brilliant lives. Rejecting youth for loudness or some amount of wild or rebellious behavior is like rejecting babies for drooling and not being able to talk.
I think a skate park would be a great asset to the community and I strongly support it. Not every athlete is cut out for team sports or for sports that require them to fall in some institution's guidelines.
I have always found that embracing rebellious youth pays off in huge ways, not only for the youth, but for the community as a whole. When we reject them, we make them feel like they are our enemies instead of our replacements, which eventually they will be.
Skateboarding is not a fringe activity. It is an accepted sport all over the country and the world. To treat it as if it's something that might go away is just sticking our heads in the sand. Let's celebrate it!
geophile, You are a very wise person.
