Nazareth Education Foundation to Re-Form Alumni Association

Some former Nazareth Area School District attendees may remember or have been part of an Alumni Association. It dissolved some time ago, but now the Nazareth Area Blue Eagle Education Foundation is trying to resurrect it.

If you are an alumni of Nazareth you may have received a newsletter this week (if not contact Bruce Applegate - bmapplegate@nazaethasd.org or call 610.759.1730 ext 2321 to be added to the list) announcing this new initiative.

I spoke with Foundation Executive Director Bruce Applegate on Thursday about this project.

He stated that they are modeling the Alumni Association after the Altoona School District's program and that while it is being started by the Foundation it will become an independent organization.

The Foundation is hoping the Alumni Association will help foster contributions, but moreover increase awareness of what is available through both organizations. Eventually, the Foundation would like the Directory and Wall of Fame to become a function of the Alumni Association.

The funds being received now from the form in the newsletter (you can join the Alumni Association today, again contact Bruce Applegate, for $5 per year or $125 lifetime donation) regarding the Alumni Association will be specified for the Alumni Association (they are tax deductible). The new Alumni Association will also honor past Alumni Association memberships (if you have information or documents related to the previous organization, contact Bruce Applegate).

The Foundation currently manages four annual scholarships. Teacher grants, which were intended to be provided to help off-set costs of providing continuing education, have not gone as planned, primarily because the teachers have not applied for them and as a result since they have not been granted additional funding can't be had. If you teach, contact the Foundation to find out what is available to you.

The Executive Director position of the Foundation is handled through the district and it is compensated by the district. The District provides office space and essential business needs. Prior to the formation of the Foundation the District had managed several funds, but when the Foundation became a legal 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation, it transferred money from NASD to the Education Foundation. KNBT maintains the funds, many of which are specified for certain activities/grants/scholarships and those not specified are general funds.
