School Board Meeting Monday

There is a Nazareth Area School Board meeting on Monday, December 18.

The agenda was not posted as of this morning. At the December 4 meeting the Act 1 Tax Commission Recommendation was given and the Commission by fulfilling its duties was dissolved.

What happens with this recommendation, I could not determine from the materials on the NASD site. It would seem the Board must make a vote (if I read the slide deck correctly no later than 3/17/07, but this seems late) to accept or decline the recommendation of the Commission.

The NASD has made available the Commissions report in PowerPoint (view it here).

I can't imagine there would be much to discuss regarding the NAEA contract except an update on whether or not the sides have gone back to negotiating.

There may be some additional information on the 2007-08 budget which was to have been trimmed back.

The other major issue is the new middle school building to be built.

If I'm missing any that you think will or should be addressed please post them in the comments.

Have a great weekend!

I think that's about it, Ross.

I don't really expect any comment on the negotiations beyond what they've said publicly already (unless they want something to be leaked out about going back to the table, etc.)

I do expect a vote on the Act 1 very soon. Basically, the board has to vote yea or nea for the commission's proposal, which it seems they will (the least impact option was chosen - good job). After that, we vote in the spring primary for or against the referendum.

I also expect some budget talk. They do seem to have a good sense of urgency about it. The budget needs to be done much sooner than in the past because of Act 1.

I'll be there. I hope others will start going, too.

I don't know why I think this, but I thought that they were going to vote up/down on the tax commission proposal at the 12/18 meeting.

Like Scott, I too hope that others start attending the meetings more regularly. The past couple of meetings have been dissapointing from this standpoint. Even the NAEA representation has dropped off considerably from earlier meetings.

I'll be there unless I'm in Texas again next week....

I just don't get it . LOTS of people came out to Borough Council meetings when they wanted to spend 2 million plus dollars. but only a handful show up for schoolboard and they are talking $70 million dollars!!! What's the problem here???? Doesn't anyone care where those tax dollrs go?

A citizens committee that formed to fight the $2,000,000 proposed municipal building generated alot of community interest. They petitioned, advertised, canvased neighborhoods to enlighten the public and engage their support, and voiced their concerns publically whenever they got a chance.

It's too bad that a group can't get some interested people to follow the school issue also. That issue will impact our taxes as well, and unfortunately I don't think it is as well known throughout the district as a serious issue.

Maybe the "Borough residents" are burned out from fighting big spending in the town, and the residents of Upper Naz,Lower Naz, Bushkill, etc, are not as concerned because the people living in those areas pay lower taxes anyway. And alot of them seem to have no financial worries. Lots of big new homes. People moving in especially for the schools. Etc.

It's a shame for the residents of the borough. They continually have to struggle to stay afloat.
