William Ford of the Morning Call reported on the A Capella Championships held at Nazareth High School on Saturday (read the article here).
According to the article, Nazareth finished third out of three to visiting Mercersburg Academy and the Hill School and there was a college competition as well.
Also according to the article, "the event was sponsored by the National Championship of High School A Cappella based in Traverse City, Mich."
You can visit the organization's web site here.
The web site noted that the event had a High School and College Division and featured the state competition at 2:00 p.m. and the Northeast Regional event at 8:00 p.m.
There has been discussion of late that our facilities can be used to bring in cultural activities for the students and residents and to earn revenue for the NASD.
Given that discussion, I looked through Board Meeting agendas to see if the NASD assessed fees for this event. I went back to July and could find no record of a request for this event. I did see two dance studios' requested use of the auditorium for recitals and the Miss PA competition, along with a few other outside groups and many school groups.
The closest I came to finding this event was the entry in July noting:
From the Nazareth Area School District Music Department for the use of various buildings on various dates and times as listed on their request form, and as approved by the administration, for concerts and dress rehearsals. [Class A - No rental, custodial, security, or ground fees to be assessed.]
Although this would seem to be for Nazareth student performances only and not a competition.
There are two aspects to this that should be considered in the future, the first is better promotion of events at the school and the second is the active recruitment of events to generate revenue.
