Received a note from Michael Mohn, Director of Information Technology, NASD regarding a new messenger system that allows for phone calls and emails to be made automatically for weather and emergencies.
The system can produce 2500 phone calls within 30 minutes.
The note from Mr. Mohn was to request information if you'd like a call or email to cut off the bottom and return it.
This is great. The emails I've received are very helpful especially with the situation of cold weather (when I, and apparently some others, were not expecting a delay) and early dismissals when you do want to find out ASAP (of course providing you supply an email you can access from work).
My thought, though, is this - the Borough of Nazareth, and Mayor Keller in particular, has been very concerned with having the ability to alert residents of an emergency. A new siren is being purchased to do this, but wouldn't it seem that this is a perfect opportunity for two taxpayer supported organizations to work together?
If the borough could load its data into the school system and be able to make announcements by phone and email when needed, and the NASD could distribute them, both could win. The Borough would have a delivery system, and the NASD could charge a one time set-up fee and a per use fee (maybe annual data maintenance or some such).
I don't know the capacity of the system, but the total NASD population area is about 30,000 and I'd be surprised if all municipal data (which would include NASD data) couldn't fit. One product purchased could serve seven organizations (munipalities plus the NASD).
I do hope someone on Council takes a step to speak with Mr. Mohn about this system and a possible partnership.
