Slim Pickens

Considering all the grief laid on those lately who have serve with little or no compensation who in their right mind would sign up?

If you consider this slim pickens or disappointing, it is time to look in the mirror.

Not only is there tremendous grief as Anon 7:17 notes, but there is also a lot of time and energy that must be given for little appreciation and less thanks.

I live in the 2nd Ward and considered the seat. I had no interest in the School Board seat, which has no candidates.

Personally, I decided not to run based on wanting to keep this site going and wanting to be a Board Member for the Nazareth Downtown Association.

I felt at this point in time I could do more in this way for the community than I could on Council.

I think being upset with others for not running or deeming those who did as being less than worthy speaks to many people's desires to have things done for them and not having a willingness to go do it themselves.

At the same time, I know people who were interested in running, but for a variety of reasons decided it wasn't the right time.

I still plan to have some candidate open houses before the election so we can get to meet these people and I also plan to have "Resident to Candidate" nights in the future.

It is about building the community up, not tearing people down.

Hats off to the individuals who have taken the step into the political arena this year.

Actually, I'm not too disappointed. Region 1 has three candidates for 2 spots. One incumbent (Mr. Butz). Region 2 has Mr. Maher running unopposed and believe me, we need his fiscal sense on the board. If anything is disapointing, it's Region 3 where nobody signed up. I kind of wish Mr. Keller would have "re-upped" if only to be around the mess that is coming.....

There is no doubt that it's a thankless job and I respect anybody who takes it on. I considered running (went as far as going down to the Wolf Bldg to get the paperwork) but then found out I'm in Region 2 and did not think Mr. Maher deserved to be replaced. Maybe in 2009.

I went back to look at all the municipalities and Nazareth had by far the most open seats to fill with 6.

If you look, you'll see most of the open seats have a candidate per position if there is any at all.

1st Ward has four for two seats and the 2 year term in 3rd Ward has 2 for one seat. 2nd Ward and the 4 year seat in 3rd Ward have one candidate per seat.

Forks and Moore seem to have the most candidates with six for 2 openings and four for 1 opening, repsectively.

In addition to the Borough Upper had four candidates for 2 seats, Tatamy was one candidate short, Stockertown six for four seats, Lower had one for one seat, and Bushkill had three for three seats.

Overall I think the municipality turnout was pretty good in comparison to other areas.

You are looking for comfortable excuses. For all the dissatifaction over the past year , there should be more concerned candidates.

I'm not looking for excuses, I am asking those that are being critical of others to first be critical of themselves.
