Yesterday was the general meeting for parents of incoming K students at Shafer Elementary. The meeting, scheduled to start at 9, began closer to 9:20 when Principal Mudlock introduced himself and staff members Mrs. McCrone, Mr. Pilla, and school nurse Mrs. Horton.
Mrs. McCrone and Mr. Pilla provided most of the information related to the student screening process and K curriculum. They also discussed what students should know entering, mid way and at the end of K.
Mr. Mudlock noted that they are anticipating 110 K students and when asked by a parent, he noted that the class size will be about 18 per class.
Parents were encouraged to have all paperwork filed prior to testing in May. Students will not be screened without their completed paperwork on file.
It was also noted that the full-day K for at-risk students will be available for 30 students in the upcoming year. These students will attend AM K and then have lunch and recess before being grouped together for PM K. The determination of who will be in this program will be made once all students have been screened and parents will be notified in writing. It was also stated that the program is on a semester basis. Students who show significant improvement can go from full to part time after the first semester and if spaces open, students who are shown to need help can move into the program in the 2nd semester.
