Last Sunday my daughter and I visited the Nazareth Food bank, which is housed in St. John's Lutheran Church. The visit was through her Sunday School class at Trinity Lutheran in Hecktown. Food Bank Director Elizabeth Huth was a wonderful host to the 4 and 5 year olds. For several weeks each student in the class brought food in to donate and then the class brought the donation, talked about why we have a foodbank, and helped to shelf their donations.
Yesterday I received the note below from Jim Byrnes, President of the Board of Directors, of the Nazareth Area Food Bank.
It appears that success has created a problem, the Food Bank needs more space. I'm sure there is someone out there who can make the donation (I can't confirm, but I do imagine the donation of space to a non-profit could result in some form of tax break/charitable contribution) and if anyone has space or an idea for the group, please contact them (maybe the 30 Belvidere?).
Here is the release as I received it:
The Nazareth Area Food Bank is currently seeking a location of its own for the storage and distribution of food to the hungry of the Nazareth area.
Now in its third decade of operation, the food bank has outgrown the space that St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church has made available so generously over the years.
The food bank distributes non-perishable food items once a month to nearly 120 needy families and individuals who live in communities that make up the Nazareth Area School District. The food bank is operated by volunteers with the support of area churches.
Our biggest need is to find a place of our own within walking distance of many of our recipients. We have relied on the generosity of St. John’s Lutheran Church for too long, and we need larger storage facilities – including commercial-type refrigerators – which would allow distribution and retention of wholesome perishable items such as fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, as well as frozen foods.
Specifically, the food bank requests donation of an existing structure or a parcel of land upon which we could build a facility of our own.
Our request has the full support of the Nazareth Area Ministerium, which is made up of the pastors of churches in the Nazareth area.
Replies may be directed to the Food Bank, in care of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 S. Broad Street in Nazareth, to Elizabeth Huth, director (610-759-0821), or to Jim Byrnes, president of the board of directors (610-923-0821).

Someone should go to the council meeting on Monday and ask if there would be any extra room in the 30 Belvidere st building. This community service is one that the borough could possibly help with and benefit from.
