Police Dept. Merger Considered

It is reported in the Express-Times that the Upper Nazareth Township Supervisors are looking to enter talks with Nazareth Borough in regard to merging the police departments (read it here).

This issue has come up in the past and was one issue in the last Mayoral election.

Upper Nazareth appointed two supervisors to discuss the matter with Nazareth Borough.

Will see if Nazareth reciprocates on Thursday, when they next meet.

The timing is interesting in that Upper Nazareth Police Chief Siegfried is running for District Magistrate and Nazareth has not appointed a new chief following Chief Ruch's resignation.

In speaking with officers previously (during the Mayoral election) the feeling was that there would not be a significant difference as the departments often work together now.

While I like the idea of having more efficiency and resources, I also have a few initial concerns.
Upper Nazareth continues to grow, especially to the west and the expanded territory of a joint force will take focus from the borough. The borough also purchased a new government center and is investing money is converting the downstairs into a police station. A union of the two forces could result in a lot of waste. Finally, at Council meetings policing has been discussed as it relates to enforcing traffic laws in the borough. I'm not sure how expanded territory will impact a move toward this as well as coverage in general in the borough.

Look forward to seeing how these meetings progress if at all.

What are your thoughts?

I'm thinking that this could in the end cost the borough more money.
1. if more police are required to cover the territory we will have that expence
2. Would we have needed the renevations at the new municipal building to accomodate our police force
3. Will we have to pay double for a chief qualified to handle a force of this size

I wonder what the advantages are?

To the individual who posted at 3:58.

Please send me an email at editor@newsovercoffee.com along with your name and if you did find this online, please include the source name (I couldn't find anything on the Express or Morning Call sites).

I'd feel better having this posted with this information out of respect to all involved (I won't use your name in the post if you don't want).

I will then create a post of its own as it merits one.

Thank you.

Nazareth Area teen, volleyball standout succumbs to cancer

Posted by JD Malone March 23, 2007 12:00PM

After 15 months of fighting cancer, Courtney Diacont is now at rest.

The 18-year-old Nazareth Area High School senior died Thursday night in her family's home.

"She always had a big smile, a sparkle," Diacont's father, Charles said. "She was just that kind of girl. Always from-the-heart kind of kid."

Doctors diagnosed Diacont with colon cancer in December 2005. By the time they found it, tumors had spread throughout her body. She opted for chemotherapy, surgery and radiation in hopes of overcoming daunting odds.

"She was told from the get-go she didn't have a shot," Charles said. "But she didn't want to give up."

"All she wanted to do was graduate with her class and go to prom. It just wasn't in the cards."

Diacont, a stand-out volleyball player for Nazareth, returned to the court this fall for several games before her illness forced her to the sidelines. Charles said her relentless good spirit and drive were infectious.

"She's a unique kid," Charles said. "Seemed like everybody liked her."

Diacont, a student pilot, often flew planes with her father and enjoyed anything outdoors, including fishing and canoing.

Diacont is survived by her father, mother, two brothers
