In a somewhat off-topic comment a reader asked to mention the drama club's production of No,No Nanette running Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Joe Owens did make a post on his blog (read it here), but when I went to the NASD site it wasn't listed (here). Owens had created a fuss when he wrote about Nazareth's refusal to participate in the Freddy Awards (akin to sports teams not competing for a league or district title).
Having said that I don't have a good link to direct you to, and in the future, if you want to make an announcement, just email me (editor@newsovercoffee.com) I want to post the information and there is no charge. Same goes for any club, team, activity or group. Photos are also welcome. Have a great weekend.

Did you have to inject a negative view????
Sorry you took the post as negative as it was only made to be helpful.
If you want an event announced I'd like to announce it, but I need the info.
I was on my way to the office when I saw the other comment and couldn't do a search beyond the hotlink to the school. Someone chipped in and provided it, seems to have worked out rather well.
I hope the auditorium is full both nights.
Personally, I still find it incredulous that the NHS Drama team does not participate in the Freddy's. I don't think anyone can disagree that the troupe consistently produces examplary productions. Someone from the drama club made the comment a while back that the reason was simply that the troupe didn't want to bothered with practicing after the play is over...that they had better things to do. I would think the actors would be proud to showcase their talents at the awards, and the benefits and recognition the Freddy's provide would be advantageous to anyone who participated. I don't buy for one minute the lame attempts of the troupe to defend their position to not participate. I fully realize that competition is not the be all and end all to high school accomplishments. But when every other school in the valley is participating Nazareth is just copping out! What are they afraid of? And if the troupe truly feels they don't need competition and recognition I would suggest they also drop out of honor society, and refrain from any other ceremony that provides recognition for a job well done!
Whatever happened to simple, pure satisfaction in a JOB WELL DONE???
Why does it matter whether they partipate in the Freddy's or not? Why is it so important to you that you feel it necessary to voice an opinion(or Joe Owen's for that matter). I don't like the plays the football team runs either, but I don't complain on the forum. It's not my business to tell the coach how to do his job, and it's not your business to tell the advisors of the drama club how to do theirs. Let them be, for crying out loud.
To anon 3:58
Unless I'm missing something here, the purpose of this forum is for people to voice their opinions in a non threatening way. I liked anon 1:30 post.....and it makes a lot of sense. So my question to you is....if you don't want to read other people's comments, why view NOC?
What about this scenario. You are the parent of an extremely talented young actor/actress who is a student in the NASD. During HS they are fortunate enough to be cast in the lead role of the school play.
They give a performance that would have definitely been nominated for a Freddy and likely would have won. You find out, much to your disappointment, that NAHS chooses to NOT participate in this Freddy despite the fact that most of the other regional HS drama orginizations do.
How would you feel?
There is more to life than being competetive. Just knowing that we are doing our best and bringing PLEASURE TO OTHERS-----is that not award enough???? There is value and excellence in doing a good job and knowing you have done a good job. There are many forms of recognition!!!tt
Ross:
I believe your brother was a state champion wrestler. What if they said to him at the end of his regular season. Ryan, congrats and great season. You were 23-1, but the district has decided not to enter the district tournament this year.
My brother was very successful in wrestling, cross country, and tennis, and I'm not uncomfortable with what I too was able to achieve in wrestling (though it pales to today's standards).
I gained a tremendous number of life skills and traits from wrestling (and you can extend that to most sports, though individual ones present unique learning experiences). Personally, I think it is very important for children to learn about winning and losing as they grow up and to experience it.
It is not to always win, simply to learn how to both win and lose. Kids need to be acclimated to the concept of competition so they know how to handle it.
This is where competition today seems to get lost. Too many people over-focus on winning at a young age, when the kids need to be learning fundamentals, and later wonder why they don't succeed (they short-cutted immediate success over fundamental skills).
Relating all of this to the drama club, it is great to practice and to perform. The performances I've seen have been very good.
At the same time, there is tremendous benefit in competition at the HS level. When you get to a 'District' level the bar is raised. It is not you against yourself. It is you against yourself and the best every other person can bring.
In any endeavor, there are great performances and there are under-performances. There are also friendships made with like-minded and able individuals from other schools. Not to mention an appreciation for others.
Given the dedication to one's own performances, how many chances do our drama club students get to see other school's troupes perform?
In sports there are televised events. I wonder how many productions our drama club students watched of other districts performances this year? At the Freddy's they could see all the other talent and show their own.
I think there are so many more benefits to negatives in performing and participating at the Freddy's I guess I simply haven't heard a convincing enough reason to be the only school opting out to support the decision.
And to the person who mentioned questioning the plays called by the football coach - you're right, I'm not questioning the direction given to the thesbians, but instead the schedule of performances.
Ross,
The fact that when you go to the Nazareth Area Website you could not easily link to the information about the Theatre Troupe's Show "No, No, Nanette" speaks volumes. I certainly can find the sports information, top line center - right on the opening page, but difficult to find information about upcoming concerts, art shows, information about the many students that participated in the District and State Chorus and Band (you will be happy to know that they are competitions)and our current drama production.
Seeing how Mr. Owens and you have so much to say about the Freddy's and Nazareth's participating, did I just miss you both??? Have you been to the production this year?? Last year?? etc...
I think the call as to going to the Freddy's lays squarely with the participants (actors, stage crew, band) and their talented and much appreciated leaders. It is not the call of the parents and certainly not the armchair call of people who do not attend or support the troupe.
GOOD LUCK TONIGHT TO NAZARETH AREA THEATRE TROUPE - Break a leg!!!

PS - I agree with Sharon Powell's comments on all the people with strong opinions, too afraid to sign their names. Ross, if you stopped allowing people to write anonymously I feel we would have more thought out, constructive comments. I enjoy and think this site could be a great benefit to Nazareth Area, but do believe that allowing people to say whatever comes off the top of their head at the moment serves no good.
If you type words that are confrontational and mean-spirited and attach your name to it without any regard to how the reader will feel -- does that make you a better citizen than someone doing it in anonymity?
Is it REALLY less cowardly -- you are still in the confines of your home hiding behind a computer screen and cannot see the look on the reader's face when they read it. Given that, are you typing things that you wouldn't say in a public forum?
There is generally a huge difference in what you will type over the internet (signing your name or not) as opposed to what you will say to a person's face. You still have no immediate consequence for your action. You never really have to deal with hurting someone else's feelings.
I'm not sure how this has grown to be me and Joe Owens against the drama club. He made a post, I mentioned it.
When I made this post all I was doing was mentioning that the production was taking place so people were aware of it and could attend if they chose.
No I did not attend the play this year, yes I have in the past. Not sure when it ran but Wednesday I was at the Downtown Program, Thursday I hosted the candidate open house, and last night I was at home with my family. Doesn't mean I don't support them, contrarily I think I've been very supportive of their efforts and talent in my posts.
I'll also note I did not attend a Nazareth wrestling match either for whomever was waiting to throw that one out. It was no offense to them, it just worked out that way.
The other day since it wasn't on the school's site I did a search and Joe's most recent post came up, but I didn't want to get into this argument again and said as much.
The school should have had it on the home page (obviously that is where I looked first). Someone should bring that to their attention.
I only engaged in the discussion again because it was raised again in comments directed at me and my family. I outlined my thoughts on the benefits of participating as a result and in my opinion none of it was negative.
Regarding anonymity, I believe it is a good thing. People simply need to be responsible. At heart I am optimistic that most will and I trust they will. I won't change that policy, I'll just delete comments I don't feel are appropriate.
Yard work awaits - enjoy this mostly nice looking day.
Joanne
"me thinks thou does't protest too much"
The people who are interested in this topic know who the person is in Nazareth that is solely responsible for Nazareth not participating in the Freddy's.
I recently viewed the Queen and made a correlation to this whole scenario. Fortunately, the Queen came to her senses. Too bad the same can't be said for Nazareth.
I have been to the play this year and it is fantastic. I didn't attend last year, but did see 42nd street and it was also an excellent performance. I have no relative or even close friend's child in the performances, my friends and I just make it a "girls" night out. That being said, I see NO REASON why Nazareth doesn't partipate in the Freddy's. So joanne, in all your protesting about other people's questioning of why we choose not to participate, you did not give us an answer. Why don't we participate? Because it's not that important? Because they perform for the love of performing? Because they don't want to compete? Because they don't want to practice another month? Because the director doesn't want them to? Provide us with the real reasons so we can answer the question and put an end to this bickering. It's not up to my daugther or her coach if they should or shouldn't participate in her team's district playoff game. It is something they strive for all season and are honored to play in when they get there. So help me understand the reasoning...it makes no sense to me.
You'd think Freddy is the ultimate achievement. Each school gets 3-5 minutes on stage? then the participants get to sit in the audience in seats that they had to pay for?
The Nazareth Drama Troupe gave 6 stellar performances in their home town. Most people recognize and appreciate and are proud of the effort and enthusiasm put forth by the students, directors, volunteers. Sometimes-some things- should be gratefully accepted.
Meanwhile the area has a Community Chorus that welcomes anyone who likes to sing. And a Community Band that is giving a benefit performance for the library Sunday May 6 in the Sr. Highschool auditorium.
Nazareth doesn't like to compete. Plain and simple. The elementary field days are a prime example. They have taken all of the competitive aspects out of them at the request of the administrators and teachers.
Meanwhile, over in neighboring Easton all of the elementary schools hold their own track and field meets and the event winners advance to face off against each other in a meet held at the end of the school year.
Any wonder why the Easton girls have won something like 70 straight dual track meets? The kids learn how to compete.
As far as the Freddy's are concerned, the NAHS shows are "nice" hs drama productions. They pale when compared to others in the area, however. THAT is why they choose not to participate.
I beg to disagree. Can 10:41 qualify his statement with proof?
Or is it merely one person's opinion? And opinions are what make the world go round and can also muddy the water. And if everyone were "#1" there would be absolutly no competition!!!!
Well it is kind of late to send you to any others, because Nazareth's is kind of late on the season as far as spring performances go. Let's just say that I can send you in any dorection N, S, E, or W for a more polished production. Just let me know which way you would like to go.
I saw three other HS performances in addition to Nazareth's and I would rank Nazareth's fourth out of the four. Not gorrible, just not quite up to snuff.
BTW, here is a list of opportunities that NASD and individual thespians/dancers are missing out on bt NOT participating in the Freddy's ...
WESTMINSTER CHOIR COLLEGE OF RIDER UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP
DESALES UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP
EXPRESS-TIMES INTERNSHIP TO ACCOMPANY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
THE ALLENTOWN SWING DANCE SOCIETY - Two, $500 cash awards.
WILSON BLACK PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP
MARTIN D. COHEN - $500 Cash Merit Award (given since 2006)
DC DANCEWEAR
KIWANIS TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
LE TIP OF TWO RIVERS $2,500 cash award
PENNSYLVANIA PLAYHOUSE - $1,000 Cash Award
MARY V. TURNBACH - $4,000 in cash awards
Whoa! wait a minute!! If Nazareth does so poorly , how would they even win one of aforementioned awards!?!?!?
In speaking to a student(s)_from Liberty and LVCSPA they felt the Freddys were"overblown"
If Nazareth does so poorly , how would they even win one of aforementioned awards!
Thanks for making my point for me. You have hit on the REAL reason Nazareth doesn't participate is because they won't win and would be lucky to even pick up nominations.
I don't know who the stiudents you are talking to, but most feel that the Freddy's gala outclasses and provides more memories than proms, graduation, etc.
One man's opinion!!!!
Some of the comments have been most unkind regarding our young people. I wonder how they feel about our negativism and cynisizm.
It's time we give them CREDIT for enthusiasm and effort. It seems much of our philosophy today is built around discrediting . Just
listen to CNN or any news program.
We would rather tear aprt than build up. My gratitude goes out to the youth of thoday . may they survive our callousness
OH MY GOD!!!
These are teenagers you are ripping into.
Do you people have no shame whatsoever?
Sorry, but this bickering is PATHETIC.
The kids stage a show. Should it compete in the Freddy's? I think so. But those that make the decision decided not to. END OF STORY.
Don't belittle these kids getting up on stage (couldn't win any awards). How do you know? Where is your Oscar?
How many of you willing to cast stones have ever been in a play? Spoke to a group of more than 50 people? My guess isn't many.
Why the attacks? I don't care if you sign your name or not, why can't you be civil?
You are the ones that sound like a bunch of elementary school students and the teenagers are on the higher road.
Lighten up. It is only a play put on by some enthusiastic kids. Whether it is good or bad is in the eyes and ears of the viewer.
