Site Registration Clarification

Noticed that the change barring anonymous comments resulted in one person posting a comment, while the number of readers stayed roughly the same.

Everyone should know that the registration is with Blogger, not NewsOverCoffee. You are required to provide an email, username, and password. When a person clicks on your name the profile appears, but you control what is in the profile. I have no access other than what anyone else has.

One person created an account today, entered the name anonymous, and that is all you know about the person excepting their profile ID.

You can in effect remain anonymous while registering to make comments.

Hope this clarifies anyones concerns with having to register to post comments.

I just set up a blogger name; so let me be the second to enter a comment.

I hope the change that took place from yesterday's rude comment expedition doesn't stop comments.

Thanks, and obviously neither do I.

Most people get it and have posted comments that are fair even if they are sometimes tough, but those that simply name call or call out people for no reason can't be tolerated.

I'd prefer people are direct and straightforward, than funny or sarcastic - online our meaning doesn't always come across as intended.

For a little more than a month I've been looking at a 'blogging code of ethics' that is being drafted. Ironically, I commented that registration should not be required, yet here I am, seeing it from another perspective.

Another thing that is recommended is to note why a comment was deleted, so I'll try to do that as well.

"Civility enforced" is the theme for the code, and while I don't like the idea of having to emphasize enforcement, it does seem there is a need to at the very least take steps to ensure a civil environment.

I hope these are the only steps needed and we can return to good discussions of both significant and sometimes irrelevant topics of interest.

Best wishes!

Ross

i registered with great reservation this morning, and I really do not like it. Now Goggle has the ability to monitor and track all of my searches unless I log off.

This rule will - and has - signifianctly hurt the amount of participation on this site. With all due respect, you should give your readers the benefit of the doubt - we can determine which posts offer incremental value and which are garbage. Requiring us to registar does not add to our ability to accomplish that task.

Please reconsider this policy. It hinders participation. Open participation means taking the good with the bad. And from a business perspective, it will eventually hurt you...user growth will slow, and may even decline since there is a lot less new stuff (comments) to come back to see...

Ross - I haven't been reading your site the past few days - got tired of all the negative comments (and my curiosity is too much - I have to read the comments) - so I just quit reading your site all together. Good to see there will be more resposibility and maybe less negativity. Thanks.

Changing something always leaves some people unhappy, some pleased, and others indifferent.

I've been following attempts by others to create a 'blogging code of ethics' for sites and will continue to do so for the purpose of having one posted on this site.

The goal is to have a positive, constructive, informative, and safe environment.

My job is to maximize the opportunities to achieve this.

It is a difficult thing to do and there are valid arguments made on both sides.

As you are aware, many posts go by without comment, others get a handful, and some draw considerable attention.

Comments, however, don't correlate to readership. The number of people posting comments is relatively small compared to the number of people visiting the site (less than 10% on a day with a lot of comments say 30).

What is more important to me is the quality of the comment, not the quantity of them.

While people can distinguish between the good and the bad, I don't want them wasting their time doing so. I want them to get to the information as fast as they can and understand the arguments made for both sides without having to jump through deleted posts, rude remarks, and off-color humor.

I think people will appreciate the higher quality and continued efforts to make the site as safe as possible for those who wish to express an opinion or make a comment.

I'll have more on this later, but wanted to respond.

Thanks for the comments from all and enjoy the weekend.
