JD Malone of the Express-Times (read it here) had an article on the Council's approval of equipment and fencing for the Skate Park.
The article also notes that the Skate Park was being built to eliminate skating on property individual's don't have permission to skate on.
Since last summer when this was first proposed, it has been 'assumed' that skaters will stop skating in the streets, intersections, and on other's property because they will have another place to go. With an alternative location, the skaters will have no excuse to be skating where they shouldn't.
What I haven't heard yet was a plan of enforcement to ensure this occurs. I'm sure many will want to use the new park, but what about on their way to or from the park? What about those who don't want to go to the park to use it?
I asked interim Chief Koch what the fine is for illegal skateboarding and learned the basic fine is $25.00, but other charges could be applied making it as high as $225.
With a significant financial commitment made for the Skate Park, it would be nice to see a plan proposed by Council to now protect public and private property from illegal skating and punish those who chose to continue to do so.
