The article notes the current space at St. John's has been outgrown, but finding a space that is inexpensive and in ways inconspicuous is a challenge.
The Food Bank is primarily supported by area churches and today serves 120 families.
Earlier this year (March 2007) I wrote about a trip I took with my daughter to the Food Bank and included a letter from Jim Byrnes, President of the Food Banks' Board of Directors, related to the need for space (read the post here). Since their situation has not changed, I thought I'd include the request for space again here:
Our biggest need is to find a place of our own within walking distance of many of our recipients. We have relied on the generosity of St. John’s Lutheran Church for too long, and we need larger storage facilities – including commercial-type refrigerators – which would allow distribution and retention of wholesome perishable items such as fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, as well as frozen foods.
Specifically, the food bank requests donation of an existing structure or a parcel of land upon which we could build a facility of our own.
Our request has the full support of the Nazareth Area Ministerium, which is made up of the pastors of churches in the Nazareth area.
Replies may be directed to the Food Bank, in care of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 S. Broad Street in Nazareth, to Elizabeth Huth, director (610-759-0821), or to Jim Byrnes, president of the board of directors (610-923-0821).
Got ideas? Contact Elizabeth or Jim to help.
