Many thanks to the library for forwarding along information on this new project recognizing our Nazareth area WW II servicemen and women:
The Memorial Library of Nazareth has recently added the contents of a scrapbook kept during World War II to the Access Pennsylvania Digital Repository. The scrapbook includes over 1,000 pictures of area servicemen and women who served during World War II.
In 2005 a photocopy of the scrapbook was given to the Library. Because of the fragile nature of the scrapbook the Library decided to digitize the collection and make it accessible on its webpage.
A $5,000 DCED grant sponsored by Rep. Richard Grucela made it possible for the library to have the scrapbook digitized by the OCLC Preservation Service Center in Bethlehem, PA. While the scrapbook was being digitized Lynn Snodgrass-Pilla, the Library Director applied to the Office of Commonwealth Libraries to have the project included the Access Pennsylvania Digital Repository. The Repository encourages a collaborative partnership among the state’s libraries, historical societies, museums, and other institutions using digital technologies to expand awareness and availability of their collections for a worldwide audience. The project was accepted and is now available for by searching on the library website at www.nazaretlibrary.org or by searching the repository website directly at www.accesspadr.org
The Library which has served as a “living war memorial” for Nazareth Borough since being dedicated in 1951 is also funded by Bushkill, Lower Nazareth and Upper Nazareth Townships. The Board and Library staff hopes that the public will use and enjoy the digital scrapbook this Veterans Day and the future.
