2008 Young Authors Contest
On Thursday afternoon The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity recognized its 2008 Young Author Contest Winners. This annual event encourages children to write and illustrate a story. Winners in each age category then have their book bound and added to the library collection. They also receive a bound copy to keep and a certificate.
In past years, the Friends of the Library made a donation to have all entries bound and entered. This year another local organization stepped up and made the donation so all twenty entries were recognized at yesterday's ceremony.
This year both my daughters entered a story. Talking to them about creating a story, what makes a story, looking at favorite picture books to get ideas was a lot of fun. With my younger daughter we started with finding a character. She picked her favorite stuffed animal - a koala bear named Cupcake. Then she made up a problem for Cupcake - she came to America on vacation but when she got here she couldn't find any eucalyptus to eat. When she found some the story was over and she returned home from her vacation. Not only did my daughter learn about the process of a story, but had fun thinking about it, writing it, and drawing pictures to go with her story.
Both girls, and I'm sure all of the children who entered are excited to get their book and see them on the shelves of the library. My daughter always checks the catalog to see if any of her books are out, and my younger one is already telling me her friend is going to check hers out.
Many thanks to everyone at the library and to the organization that made the donation to publish all the books for this wonderful program.
