Morning Call on Monday's Board Meeting

The Morning Call has a story on the Board Meeting from Monday (read it here).

Not much new, but the one point that was not really emphasized is the fact that the $3M or $3.29 is an annual cost likely to increase each year.

What also surprises me is that the decision to have part or full-time K doesn't have to do with what is better for the child academically (I've yet to hear or read about a discussion on the merits of the full day advantage), but instead what the parents want mixed with what the NASD wants to spend.

Untrue----optional all/full day K is possible, and has been done in other districts.

All day K is better for 2 working parents, and it is infintely better for kids to be in school than in daycare but don't impose all day K on those parents like myself who make the choice to stay home with their children and would rather have a 1/2 day K

why should the district pay for all K kids to go all day if some kids and parents don't need or want it?

optional all day K IS possible

I guess you just made my point - the decision by the school district should not be based on parental convenience.

If that were the case we should extend the school day to begin at 7 am or so and extend until 7 pm, and last year round.

In that way no one would need daycare once their kids hit age 5 - even those with a long commute.

Life is about choices. You make a choice to stay at home and raise your kids - you have less money. You make a choice to both work, your kids go to daycare or you get a nanny.

These choices shouldn't burden all taxpayers.

The NASD ought to be making a decision based on what program is more academically beneficial - part or full day K. Then once they determine which is more beneficial they can determine to what extent and at what cost.

Daycare, stay at home parents, convenience - not relevant to the argument, yet this is what has been discussed to date, not the academic benefit (which I'd argue doesn't exist).

Wants are overwhelming needs and the costs are about to crush us as a result.

Check out the football coach we just hired (and possible gym teacher). Every Nazareth resident should read this.

Let me make another observation. Old folks like me remember that there wasn't a kindergarten when we were young. I would suggest that we return to those days. All that kindergarten and this new plan by the district has achieved is more dues paying members for the NEA, PSEA, and the local union. It would also be cheaper to return to 1-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Again, the current structure was put into place not for educational purposes but for giving more jobs to teachers and administrators. Thus the out of control costs we now are experiencing.
