JD Malone of the Express-Times reports on a proposal from Thursday's Council Workshop meeting that would result in a soundsystem, new carpet, desks, and interior paint for the Council Chambers (read it here).
The plan had been discussed several times over the past year, and while it may be hard to believe a sound system is needed, for those who attend the meetings and would also like to hear all the discussion it is much needed (particularly in summer when the air conditioner is on).

It appears that requests to make this building 'ADA' compliant will be ignored again. I have to wonder if this is to maintain 'Colonial charm' of the building.
I think it is a real shame that people with disabilities will continue to be discriminated against in limiting their access to this public building.
To those who don't know there is only one restroom with one toilet in the entire building. It is in the basement with access limited to two narrow stairways (one inside and one outside). Anyone in a wheel chair can forget about using the facilities. The building is used for meetings several times a week and on week-ends. It would be nice everyone had the opportunity to addend these meetings.
The Express-Times calls it a renovation project. I wonder if new carpeting, paint and new furniture constitute a renovation.
I don't know if this is true or not, but I have heard that any renovation to a public building must include making it 'ADA' compliant, if it is not already compliant. Perhaps removing the vestibule would constitute a renovation project and this is why they don't want to remove it.
In the past, all talk of this project included removal of the vestibule. Now the plan is to leave it be. This sounds alot like the Dog Park. During all of the preliminary discussions there are no objections to the project, but when it is time to finalize everything, objections come out of the woodwork.
One last comment, I have to wonder why this project is being spearheaded by the economic development committe instead of the public property committee.
