I made a post based on the newspaper articles (read it here).
Later that day Brad posted his notes from the meeting (read it here). Included in that post was reference to the hiring from the public and Dr. Lesky's response:
NASD has hired a new Football Coach, Mr. Robert Melosky. Several questions were asked at the end of the meeting regarding this hire. One specific question was whether there was anything in Mr. Melosky’s past that would cause NASD concern. Dr. Lesky responded there was not.On that day a reader posted a link to Northampton County Courthouse documents, it appears to have been cut-off, but I also received an email from a different reader who provided it in full (view the court documents here).
Today, both the Express-Times (read it here) and Morning Call (read it here) have reports on the hiring. The Express-Times report is on Editor Joe Owens' Blog, whereas the Morning Call report was in the newspaper, so the tone is very different. Owens questions the Board and Administration for making the hire in light of the charges, whereas the Call indicates Parkland officials (where Melosky teaches) were unaware of the charges, but Nazareth officials were.
[note from the editor - update - thanks to a reader who informed me the Express-Times had the print article in Thursday on the incident - read it here]
The Morning Call reports:
Northampton County Assistant District Attorney Kelly A. Lewis said Thursday that Melosky is set to have a formal arraignment in county court next week on simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct charges. The Morning Call also reported in describing the incident from court records:
Lewis said Melosky's preliminary hearing was April 3 before District Judge Joan Marinkovits.
Christopher Newhart, who was 17 at the time, stepped between the two and tried to prevent a fight. Sweeney allegedly hit Newhart in the face and head two times.
Melosky, who was at the game as a spectator, allegedly joined in and hit Newhart ''multiple times'' in the face and head.
Other people tried to calm Melosky, described by police as ''extremely agitated.''
George Stilgenbauer, who attended the game, testified at Melosky's preliminary hearing that he saw Sweeney hit Newhart, then saw Sweeney holding the boy's wrists.
''And the next thing I know, a very large man, who I didn't know who he was at the time, came from nowhere and hit [Newhart] right in the head. As [Newhart] started to fall, he hit him again,'' according to a transcript of Stilgenbauer's testimony.
Stilgenbauer, whose age and address were not included in the transcript, added that he believed Newhart was hurt.
''He was kind of out of it,'' Stilgenbauer said. As Stilgenbauer began pulling Newhart away, he testified that Melosky said, ''Do you know who I am? Do you know who I am?''
Stilgenbauer said he responded, ''I don't care who you are. You don't hit a kid like this. This is ridiculous.''

Hi Ross, here's The Express-Times' news report about Melosky's hire from the day before (Thursday).
I would love to see someone on the school board start the process of fixing this mistake.
Lesky says that questions about Meloskey's background were answered satisfactorily. Did the information about these charges move from the interview process to the athletic committee and, eventually, to each and every board member?
If so, they still chose the candidate with two misdemeanors and one summary offense pending over the other 16 candidates? What, were the other candidates already incarcerated?
If it is too late to do something about his hiring as a football coach can the board AT LEAST block any attempts to bring him in to the district as a teacher. If any back room deals to this effect have been made, lets squash them NOW!
One would think ANYONE with a pending assault charge(against a minor?) would never be considered for employment, let alone hired,in the NASD until the issue is resolved---
you have to security clearances to bring in cupcakes for your childs birthday at Shafer Elementary school but (alledgedly)assault a 17yr old and you can get hired as the football coach...
crazy stuff
In regards to the hiring of Nazareth’s new football coach I have 2 questions:
If this was such a good selection, why was it not listed as an agenda item. The school board agenda was posted Friday and there was no documentation that this was going to be addressed at the meeting. Other personnel issues were on the agenda, like the newly appointed Assoc. Principal at the High School. My humble thought, the football coach was not posted, because they did not want the public to attend. Holland, Lesky, Davis and the entire “hiring committee” new this was going to “ruffle feathers” in this town so it was better to push it through quietly.
If Lesky, Holland, Davis and the entire “hiring committee” are so sure of their selection and they are comfortable with the “background” checks on this new coach, they should be fully accountable for their decision to hire him. To know of this man’s history and the pending court case tells me that either they did not check his background or they decided to ignore what was discovered on his background check.
Let's face facts, this guy will not be removed. Doing so would mean that Lesky would have to admit he and his pals made a mistake, which we all know will never happen.
At least on the bright side, when this guy smacks some student around, we can get yet another tax increase to cover the lawsuit we know will follow shortly afterwards.
I just read this on the Express Times Football forum. I am really beginning to wonder what is going on in Nazareth.
Some Facts
1. Two years ago Madson let go two coaches for pending DUI
2. Last year a newly hired baseball coach had it revoked because an incident came to light he shoved a player at Freedom
3. Two of the Superintendant close friends children recently were given adminstrative positions where they were the only one to be interviewed.
4. Both of them were on the committee to hire the new football coach.
Seems like King Lesky calls on the shots from his throne...this hiring may have been one of his called in favors again.

How much longer does Nazareth need to put up with Lesky? Maybe we need to find his replacement...
