Happy Friday!

Didn't seem to be much on the news front and I couldn't see discussing the school budget and upsetting everyone on what looks to be a beautiful Friday.

If it weren't for the handful of conference calls I have today I think I'd knock off and hang-out with the kids by the pool, may still even try to squeeze a bit of that in;-)

Am also looking forward to a few days off to read (visit the book club to see what the family and I are reading), write/post, and relax with the family.

How do you enjoy life?

While trips are nice, when I'm at home, simplicity tends to rule. I love to disconnect, shut off the computer, don't answer the phone, and get fresh air outside or in the garage, which is my 'man-cave' loaded with kids toys in the front, and my toys in the back (tools and wood mostly).

Gardening and yard work, even weeding, is pleasurable on a nice day, as is cooling off in the pool with the kids, while being a kid for a while.

I never had anything further than junior high wood shop and mechanical drawing, but I love the challenge of designing and building things. The hands on, concept to design to product is something that resonates with me. I don't profess to be very good, but I've acquired a great respect for others who do this work either as a hobby or a living.

We also enjoy playing board games and dominoes when we are outside. Chess is a favorite for my daughter and I. Our younger daughter knows how to play, but goes in spurts. We've yet to convince mom to take it up.

I hardly ever watch baseball anymore (it is tough being a Pirates fan these days), but playing catch is always nostalgic. I bought both girls gloves last fall. In the interest of safety we started throwing with a tennis ball and my younger daughter loves being the runner in games of pickle.

They also like playing football, especially when we let them put on their pink Steelers' jerseys with 'sparkly' numbers. It is one on one with dad being the quarterback for both teams. Might have to do that this weekend in honor of the opening of training camps.

Putting something on the grill for dinner is also something I really enjoy. Whether its fajitas in the cast iron skillet, bacon and scallop or sausage and vegetables on kabobs, or simply burgers (well-seasoned for me thanks) and hot dogs, a cold beer and high heat seem to complement one another nicely.

After dinner, as the sun is setting and kids are rounding up fireflies, sitting on the deck and talking over a glass of wine and laughing as the kids catch, name and sometimes maime each capture, is a perfect way to cap a beautiful day for me.

Wow, that was a great day and its only 8:00 a.m., can't wait to go live it!

Refreshing! Enjoy the day! More people should take the time to reflect and enjoy the simple things.

It never ceases to amaze me and how enjoyable the ‘simple’ things are, and how in today’s go-go-go world they are the first things we throw away in order to maintain the lifestyle we are presenting to the world.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but whenever I set aside a few moments to just stop, think and reflect…the next thing I know is the ‘to-do’ list or ‘action-items’ from home or work invade my thoughts and take me back onto to information superhighway to address one more thing… reply to one more email…make one more follow up phone call.

Do you think this is what our forefathers worked so hard for? Can you image their reaction to the fact that we never get a chance to disconnect and refresh? Our children grow up before we have a chance to enjoy their childhood. I watch with extreme pride my 11 year old and 8 year old becoming good, respectable hard working people. I see their ethics and morals and realize I must be doing something relatively well. But I forget to just hang out with them too often.

Thanks for the reminder to go out and play.
