As a member of the clinical trial community, I would suggest that the Heffelfingers check out www.clinicaltrials.gov and search for clinical trials focusing on this disease. While insurance companies do not reimburse for trials, most (if not all) drug companies (sponsors) will reimburse for time, travel, and meds during a clinical trial.
