MS Vehicle Break-Ins

The Morning Call had an article on Sunday on the skyrocketing incident rate of vehicle break-ins throughout the Lehigh Valley (read it here).

This isn't a big surprise, as the Lower Nazareth Citizens Watch Group had warned about this on several occasions.

What was a bit of a surprise is the fact that there have been several break-ins of vehicles at the Nazareth Middle School.

Thanks to the alert reader who directed me to the announcements section under the Principal's corner of the web site (link is here) to learn:
ANNOUNCEMENTS for Monday, November 24, 2008
LETTER A EARLY DISMISSAL AT 11:48 TODAY

Teachers/Parent Volunteers: There have been a few car break-ins in our
parking lot. Please do not leave purses or anything of value in your car
anytime during the day or evening when you are here. The police are aware
of the situation. Please keep all personal items tucked away.

The lot would seem to be rather isolated, so I'm surprised no one has noticed this happening or that it has been able to take place at all, but if visiting lock your doors and hide any personal items.

There was an announcement made during Holy Family's services regarding break-ins as well. Sadly, the perps feel it necessary to pick schools and churches as their prey. I believe that we all need to pray for the criminals to refrain from these actions as well as that they be brought to justice.

This is quite a sad commentary on our economy.

Parking lots that are secluded are easy targets to thieves. Schools and churches, then know that they have a large amount of time in which there will be little or no pedestrian traffic and give them plenty of time to do their work.

There was an article in the MCall a couple of months back of this going on at the LA Fitness facility in Allentown. It go so bad that they positioned a guard in the parking lot during certain hours.

Security cameras would be a good way to stop this, especially if they were positioned in a way to catch license plates of cars entering and leaving the area. At the school, they would be a benefit to minimizing any drug related activity or even deter predators from casing the area.

Best bet is to leave nothing visible in your car to take. If they don't see anything, they will move on to a car where they can.
