Safer in 2008 - or Not?

It has been noted several times on this site that vehicle break-ins in the townships throughout the Lehigh Valley have increased this past year with thieves seeking electronic equipment of commuters such as GPS, laptops, satellite radio, and phones.

The Morning Call has an article noting that over-all crime is down in the area (read it here).

The article notes, however, that retail crime reported to Colonial Regional police is expected to be triple what it was a year ago.

In Nazareth, with the exception of some 'victories' by the police, it appears crimes are still not regularly reported on in the press. This is a shame because our awareness of crimes is an important step in preventing future ones.

So what do you think? Did you feel safer this year than last? Is crime a problem in our community? Is the reporting of crime in the area well-done or could it be improved?

For some reason even though the media and reports say that crime is down, it seems that in the past year I've seen more violent murders and muggings than I can recall in the past. Perhaps my memory is just fuzzy!

there are community/police meetings on one of the tuesday evenings each month.(i forget which-not hard to find out) those who have concerns should be at those meetings to get answers from the chief or officer lahofsky who attend and run the meetings. they are productive meetings and are well attended by members of the community.

I do not feel safer. My husbands truck was broken into right in our driveway. The police had told us that we were the 5th call that morning but there was never anything in the newspaper. I would have liked to have seen something in the paper warning other residents of the borough.

The borough website has a calendar which shows the meeting dates. I see it isn't updated yet for December but I imagine it would be soon.

It would be nice if more police happenings would be in the newspaper or web-sites because it would alert the residents to be more cautious when needed. I had mentioned that one evening there were a group of teens in our driveway around my husbands car and a neighbor spotted them and chased them and then alerted us to what had transpired. Tonight We just came from McDonalds at the Northampton Crossings and it was overloaded with young teens and one woman had complained that there was foul language being used in the playland. It is one thing to be a kid and hang out and it is another to travel in packs and act in a rude manner. I don't feel safe in public or even in my own home. There doesn't seem to be any self-respect or respect for others. One of the big problems is the parents who drop there kids off at the movies unsupervised and leave them to hang out until they pick them up. I would not want to work at such a place, the workers put up with alot when these young people come in. The other problem is the parents who don't seem to care where there kids are or what they are up to. I remember the commercials "Do you know where your children are?" when I was growing up. It isn't only the young people that make me feel unsafe it is the people who are raising them. We live in a world where people feel thay are entitled to everything and don't care how their actions effect others. I used to shop every year on Black Friday however I opted out this year because people are crazy...it isn't worth mine or someone else's life to get that bargain and it is a shame that atleast one person we heard of had to lose their life because of the irresponsible actions of others. On a positive note I attended the tree lighting service at the circle in Nazareth on Thursday evening and it was a wonderful night. People were considerate and the adults and children appeared to have a good time. Thank you to all those who were involved in the event. The Manger Scene is absolutely beautiful.
