Karam and Lewis to Race This Weekend in NJ

Sage Karam and Corey Lewis will compete in the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda event at Thunderbolt Speedway (visit the track site), in Millville, NJ.

The race is the closest to home for the Nazareth based drivers and marks the third stop of seven for the series championship. Each location hosts two races, so the series is comprised of 14 events in seven different states.

After four races, Lewis is 9th in points and Karam is 15th out of 26 drivers. Lewis had an overall good weekend at the last stop qualifying 5th for both races, but a move for the lead led to an accident leaving him in 21st place. In the second race, he made some passes and finished 2nd. Karam had his best points finish in the 2nd race of the last event as well.

There will be five racing series at the track and practice begins on Friday. All three of the the ladder series sponsored by Mazda will compete along with two sports car series. There will also be a tuner display and drifting exhibition. Saturday and Sunday will feature five races each day beginning at noon with qualifying in the morning.

Similar to Major League Baseball, open-wheel racing has a ladder system, and while there are far fewer participants per level in auto racing, the progression is similar. The BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda is the equivalent of MLB’s Class A level. Class AA is the Star Mazda Championship, and Class AAA is the Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, which features 23 international drivers and is renowned as a launching pad for drivers desiring to compete in IndyCar and Formula 1.

Past Atlantic Champions include: Michael Andretti, Jacques Villenueve, Scott Goodyear, Buddy Rice, and AJ Allmendinger. The Skip Barber Racing program alumni read like a who's who in motorsport (read an alumni list of drivers here).

I'll be at the track on Saturday and plan to provide coverage for both drivers.

Good luck and best wishes Sage and Corey!
