Colbert Report - Media Gone Wrong

The Express-Times reports on the Colbert Report piece on the Tatamy boy who had his library card from Nazareth taken away because he should be using the Easton Library (read the article here).

The Report identifies the boy as being accused of being a 'thief' for stealing books from one library because he should have gone to another.

Unfortunately, Nazareth gets the black eye, when in fact it was Easton Library that called the family and our state regulations coupled with Tatamy's refusal to financially support the library that caused the problem (read the article on the situation here).

This is probably a good reason why one should not get their news from a comedy channel, and it should make one think and question each piece like this in the media we see instead of taking it as gospel truth.

I know, the Report is intended to be funny, and not news, but they should at least be factually accurate.

According to the article, the Naz library alerted Easton library of the situation. The black eye should be all-inclusive. Still, it is a very funny and clever piece...

"A female employee at the Nazareth library then called Easton Area's main library to complain that a mistake had been made, said Stephanie Supinski, manager of the Palmer branch, who later left the message on the Philips' answering machine. Supinski said she didn't know who made the complaint with the main library."

Hi Ross,

As a Tatamy resident and member of Council, I take exception to your comment " . . . Tatamy's refusal to financially support the library . . .".

Unfortunately Tatamy just does not have the financial resources available to provide to the Nazareth Library what it requires. I would like nothing better than to support the library - I personally feel it should be the right of every citizen to have access to the public library system. I grew up in Hunterdon County New Jersey - all of us had access to the Hunterdon County Free Public Library System by virtue of where we lived, and I was used to having access to the library (and all the branches). Moving to Pennsylvania after I got out of the Navy in 1991, I was shocked to learn that there was no county supported public library system - each municipality was responsible for their own library.

Finances being what they are for a small community like Tatamy, we have to pick and choose very carefully where funds are allocated to ensure that we benefit the community at large. Maybe in a few years once the under construction Chrin Commerce Center comes to fruition we will have more money that can go towards the library. May I also state that for many years, the Nazareth Library allowed citizens of Tatamy to purchase library memberships, which were reimbursed (50%) by the Borough. The library had a change of heart several years ago and instituted an "all or nothing" rule, forcing our residents to see other alternatives. Thankfully the Palmer library allows us to pay for a membership there.

I wish there was a better way - but for now (and the short-term) this is what we in Tatamy have to live with.

Perhpaps Tatamy could just write more speeding and stop sign tickets to pay for access to the library.

Ha thats a joke.

Kinda.

NO, i never got a ticket there, except my 1% borough tax.

Peace Chris.

ps. i think Colbert is hilariuos even though i am a conservative.

Chris,

I have to disagree that Tatamy doesn't have the money to support the library - they've made the choice not to support it.

I respect there is a balancing act between what residents want with the revenue available and when that falls out the most typical response is raise taxes.

Nazareth Borough supports the library along with its many parks and it contributes money and resources to help make many activities available. People from surrounding communities benefit from this - and it is paid with borough residents' tax dollars. This is our choice of what we are willing to pay for services we want.

Tatamy is doing a disservice to its residents by not supporting the public library system - and I don't think the residents should get a free ride.

Maybe it is time for Tatamy Council to find out what donation amount is requested from the library system and start planning for a way to pay it.
