School Board Meeting

Thanks to the reader who forwarded some information on last night’s school board meeting.  Prior to public comment at the end of the meeting, Board President Ken Butz announced his resignation from the position, but not the Board citing difficulties with other board members who have accused him of not being able to remain impartial when it comes to voting on resolutions after presiding over contract negotiations.

Also announced by Dr. Lesky is that the district is planning on holding an H1N1 vaccination clinic, and dates will be announced once they have vaccines in hand.

I looked through the board agenda and there wasn’t much to it.  There was a transfer of $90,700 from the General Fund to the Capital Reserve Fund in order to purchase classroom computers for the intermediate school.

We also contracted for one year with a company in Pipersville, PA to provide equipment maintenance and calibration and necessary chemicals for the MS pool at a cost of $8,875.

Am I the only one that finds it more than a bit interesting that we are paying almost $9K to a company that about an hour away when there are services located right here in Nazareth that could do the same maintenance of the pool?

With the economy in the shape it is, why is it that our district is so willing to spend money outside of our area when they could hire a LOCAL contractor and keep our tax dollars at home. I would be willing to pay a little more if I knew the dollars were staying in OUR community.

I hear you Ranter, but that's how the problems start. A little more for a local, but which local? Directors and admin all have their favorite "local".

Now, if you could keep the bidding to vendors within the district, that might work in some cases. However, you'd still need a check-and-balance to keep the limited competition from driving up costs.

Fourth, know exactly what you mean, and in this area, you couldn't be more dead on.

A bid process with citizen involvement maybe? Evaluate local bids based on merit an not who is related to you?

My guess is that dollar figure is probably higher due to the fact that they have a two hour commute between Pipersville and Nazareth.

This administration continues to take more and more from this community, but never give anything back. but that seems to be common.

Lower Nazareth just did a road repaving project and the company that did the work was out of IL. Do you mean to tell me that there are no companies local that could do the work? And if they did indeed get a better price, shame on the local companies for screwing themselves.
