"College" Students Door to Door for Cash

Yesterday there were at least a few young men claiming to be college students going door to door to raise money for school.

I saw two kids walking from a neighbor’s front door in the afternoon and they did make their way to our home.  They made the mistake of ringing the doorbell, which sets our dog off something fierce.  At 95 pounds, barking, growling, and trying to go through the storm door, about all I heard was “we are earning points for college” before I said not interested and they were happy to walk away.

This was early afternoon and I didn’t think much of it.  Last night, however, I got an email from a reader in Upper Nazareth who was approached at 8:30 p.m. by two men using the same pitch.  Understandably it freaked her out a bit and she called police.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they are around again today, so keep an eye out and don’t provide any funds to these individuals.

Indeed! They'll say they've spoken to your neighbors -- and some will even produce a check signed by one of the unlucky suckers. Ask for college ID. (If they produce it, look for obvious signs of falsification. Ask simple questions about the campus and their current classes if unconvinced. Hucksters will stumble over responses.) Ask them for a website. (If they're legit, they will have a URL that you can visit for full information, and the site will have a space for you to enter their ID to give them sales credit.) If the so-called student is over-complimentary, giving you the hard sell, and providing only basic details, they're a CROOK! Don't be afraid to call the authorities if you see the snake oil salesperson moving on to your neighbor's house!!!

They were going around lower nazareth around 8:30pm as well last night. We answered and said not - the guy left but I called a neighbor who I knew was home by herself. Not a good thing - especially after dark.

There was a guy at our upper Naz. home Friday. He was talking about college and needing money but I had a barking which triggered a crying baby and made it hard to understand. Never thought to report it but now that I saw this I called a few elderly neighbors to make them away.
