Defining: Success, Mediocrity, or Worse

Thanks to the Papier Boy for highlighting the article in the Express-Times (read it here) addressing the Easton Suburban Water Authority's warning system in his comment on the recent post (read it here) on the boil water advisory.

While many non-customers have complained of receiving calls to boil water from a company that does not provide their water, as many customers have complained they were never called. I even got a note from a person with a well who was provided the advisory.

The Express-Times made a post addressing the call system that was apparently implemented one year ago and of which this was the first 'major' test.

Here is the quote from officials along with statistical information:
"In my opinion, it went OK, but it needs to be improved," said Roy White, authority manager. "It needs some tweaking, if you will."

Of 39,140 automated calls placed to warn consumers to boil their water before drinking it, 34,639 were delivered, according to White. The remainder went unanswered or a number had been disconnected.

It would appear from this information that something less than five thousand customers were reached.

The article also notes, however, that:
Authority officials said even though the system is imperfect, they believe it helped generate more awareness and word of mouth about the alert than they would have without it.
This is the section of interest. Without specifically stating that they called non-customers, they are acknowledging that the flaws in the system resulted in word of mouth awareness that would not have occurred without the calls.

Layman's terms - we called unaffected non-customers, who knew we shouldn't have called them, who called us, who hit our web site in huge numbers and shut it down, and then the story got picked up online, in print, and on TV and resulted in the customers we didn't call finding out - mostly.

First test. "OK result". Wrong.

This is a public utility providing a critical resource - water.

Not only did they fail to acknowledge any flaw in their system, they portrayed their flaw as a benefit.

And, in the call I received noting that the advisory was lifted, the call stated specifically that my phone number was affiliated with an Easton Suburban Water Authority customer. I called and asked which customer, but have not yet received a response.

The Express-Times indicated that Easton Suburban purchased this system in anticipation of State Law requiring such a system (read the article here) and that they selected One Call Now as their provider.

One Call Now (visit the site), provides:
The One Call Now™ phone message service delivers automated phone calls, within minutes, to any group, large or small. Schools, congregations, sports teams, businesses and municipalities throughout the country rely on us for routine reminders and emergency notifications. With One Call Now phone message service you talk, we deliver!
Under the item Emergency Services, it lists its service package, "One Call Now GEO is our map-based emergency notification for citizens and businesses."

This has nothing to do with customers, which explains calls made to non-customers and not made to customers during this situation.

It also indicates this feature: "Published and unpublished phone number database of residences and businesses."

This explains how they got your phone number - particularly for non-customers.

Under FAQs, however, it does note a 'wizard' for uploading content. It would appear a decision was made to go Geo instead of upload.

Obviously, I may be wrong, but it appears the evidence or comments at least point in this direction.

Easton made a mistake and ought to correct and acknowledge it.

There is an even bigger point.

Why don't we have a government based emergency management system in place?

The Nazareth School District, and I'm sure many others have call and email systems. Nazareth Borough invested in its siren. Water companies and other utilities have some form of alert system. All of these are public entities contracting with private companies to serve the public. Our tax dollars are being spent over and over for the same service in various segments.

Why not one single email and phone alert system contracted centrally or at least regionally, and shared amongst users on a tax base tiered system (ie pay in proportion to revenue you receive locally)?

This would make sense, but I'm sure fiefdom's and allocations would be the devil in the details.

Music Concert - Friday Night

Many thanks to the reader who forwarded this information:

The Nazareth School District Music Department will be having the Honors Concert Friday night January 9, 2008 at 7PM. This concert includes children that have been chosen from all three elementary schools, the middle school and the high school to perform both in choral presentation and also in instrumental. It is sure to be an entertaining evening. It would be great night for the community to come out and support the youth of Nazareth and enjoy a musically entertaining evening.

Valley Blogosphere

Today the Morning Call featured the "Resolutions" post I made earlier this week (read the post here) in its Valley Blogosphere section. This section in the opinion page highlights various blog posts from around the valley. Providing this recognition is very much appreciated by myself and I'm sure the other bloggers feel the same.

They had reached out to me earlier, but since this site is so focused on Nazareth, not many of my posts are relevant for their broad readership.

On Monday I was contacted by the paper to see if they could use this post and I was glad to do so. What I hadn't realized was that it would run today. If I had, I would have submitted the photo they requested right away, but since I didn't, they used one from my days at the Nazareth School District as Athletic Director (nearly 10 years ago - almost like looking at the old yearbook photo - well, not quite;-)

The Morning Call article is here.

Lions Club Meetings

Prior to making the post on volunteerism and I'm guessing based on my Resolutions post, I received this email regarding the Lions Club Meetings:

The Nazareth Lions Club meets the first Thursday of every month at the Dryland U.C.C Church in Hecktown and the third Tuesday of every month at Mivajo.s Restaurant in Upper Nazareth Township. Both meetings are dinner meetings and start at 6:30 P.M.

We support the YMCA, the Nazareth Library, and we provide four scholarships each year to needy students. The major interest of all Lions Clubs it sight conservation and work with the blind and hearing conservation and work with the hearing impaired.

Volunteers are badly needed to continue our service to the community. Our motto is "We Serve."

Boil Water Advisory Lifted

I just received a call from Easton Suburban Water (a company I don't receive service from) indicating that my phone number is affiliated with a customer in their service area and that the boil water advisory has been lifted.

Based on receiving these calls and comments posted on the previous post, this company clearly has some issues with its call system since it notified non-customers and failed to notify all of its actual customers about a boil water advisory.

For the sake of public safety, let's hope they fix it.

Volunteerism

The Express-Times has an article on the state of local Lions Clubs, which speaks to volunteerism today (read the article here).

The article notes the recent dissolution of the Bushkill Lion's Clubs and the decrease in membership at the Nazareth, Easton, and Palmer Lions' Clubs.

One person in the article believed the decline was due to selfishness on the part of younger people, another noted that corporate support of employees in service has declined, and a third indicated it was simply a matter of people not having enough time.

Time

There is no question time is a factor. We have a large number of people who commute to work an hour or more, which probably wasn't the case twenty to thirty years ago when service groups had record numbers.

People are also expected to work more hours than they did previously, or at least the workforce is expected to do more with less people, which results in individuals working more hours and often catching up via email and mobile phone outside traditional work hours.

Family

This could be coupled with time, but many families have both spouses working and those with children have additional activities, most of which require some element of volunteerism or at least travel. Youth leagues often have multiple practices per week and competitions. Parents are asked to volunteer as coaches, work the refreshment stand, keep score, and do everything else it takes to run a league. Probably no different than in the past, except that so many more kids are involved and there are so many more options than there once were.

Competing Interests

I don't have statistics to support this, but it does seem there is a foundation or support group for just about everything these days. Each one is supported by volunteers and each one is asking for help - both in time and money. Individuals can only support so many groups and organizations at any given time and while there are many good ones out there, you simply can't give and support them all.

Geography

I do believe companies are supportive of volunteerism on a local level, but at the same time they demand more of their employees in regard to production. So if a person is volunteering for a cause, such as Cancer, they are probably more likely to get support than they are their local lions club which is fifty miles away and in another state.

Selfishness

I don't believe selfishness is the reason. I do think these groups and organizations need to adapt. The article did note that some of the Lions' groups are looking at the web and creating cyber-clubs. I know personally, that I'd prefer helping a group when it is most convenient to me and not at a prescribed date and time to attend a meeting. There are so many tools available online today for these groups to conduct work that there probably are opportunities that are not being taken advantage of.

In my resolution post (read it here) I made a plea for people who belong to groups and organizations to let us know (by emailing me or making posts on this site) what is happening, what events are being planned, what help is needed, and when and where the event will take place as well as a post-report on how it went. Awareness is critical. Most of these groups are operating in the same way they did in the 50s and 60s and the social environment has changed. People communicate electronically and can work this type of communication into their hectic schedules because they can do so when it is most convenient for them.

This challenge is not unique to our local Lions' Clubs, it is a challenge for all associations. For associations to survive, they need to have a clearly understood value, they need to communicate that value, and they need to adapt their operations to their volunteers (or prospective ones).

New Location for District Magistrate

The District Magistrate's office has changed location, but will remain in Nazareth according to an article in the Express-Times (read it here). The new court location is situated in the Borough Building on South Main Street.

water advisory???

Today I received an automated call from Easton Suburban Water Authority noting there was a boil water advisory.

What confused me was the fact that I am not a customer.

The Express-Times has an article and it clearly notes that Nazareth Borough is not included (read it here).

I went to PA American Water, where I am a customer, and there was nothing listed regarding a water advisory.

So I called Easton Suburban and was asked to stay on the line to speak with someone. Of course there was no one to speak to, I got a voice message asking me to leave them a message and they'll get back to me.

So I asked why I was called, and how? Will let everyone know once I get an answer.

2009 Resolutions

I'm not real big on New Year's Resolutions, but it is as good a time as any to reflect and to look ahead.

The Past.

NewsOverCoffee launched on March 28, 2006 in its current form. I had first tried to launch one in July of 2005, but it didn't work out as planned. Through word of mouth and a few local controversies (the Borough Government Center and Teacher's Contract), more people found out about the site as 2006 went on and have stayed with it since then, telling friends and neighbors and helping it to grow.

The Present.

This past year has been nothing short of remarkable when it comes to readership. The site had over 100,000 visitors (109,378 to be exact) and even more page views with over 22,000 unique visitors. The average visit lasted one minute and forty one seconds.

80% of the visitors came more than once and a remarkable 31% visited 100 or more times (with 20% at 200+)!

What still surprises me the most is that NewsOverCoffee is the top search result on Google when you type "Nazareth News".

The Future.

Looking forward, I hope to continue to keep the site updated, find new ways to promote the community through the site, and have more people engage in contributing to the content.

If you have ideas or features you'd like to see added, please let me know either in comments or by email - editor@newsovercoffee.com

If you are interested in writing about the community, updating us on meetings you go to or events you attend, let me know - everyone would appreciate the information.

The Hope.

Undoubtedly 2009 is going to be a tough year. We are fortunate to have a community with a lot of people who give their time to serve us from the employees of the boroughs and townships, to the volunteers at our churches, foodbank, library, organizations, associations, and schools.

Most of all in this coming year I hope this site can be a place where all of their good work can be recognized and awareness of their work helps each group to have enough support and resources to be successful at a time we most need them to be.
