Weekly Blogosphere Round-Up

New blog in town: Nazareth Center for the Arts. This past week I began working with the Nazareth Center for the Arts. I created a web site for them along with a blog, which are works in progress since the commission hasn’t even gone over them yet, but time was tight so the decision was made to get them going and change as needed. In the future, you can expect different committee members to contribute news and information about the activities taking place at the Center. The Center’s grand opening is 12/18, 12/19, and 12/20 and Gabe Toth will kick off 2010 with a performance on Wednesday, January 6 – more details to follow.

Also, before the traditional run-down, I want to alert everyone to a great song posted recently on Facebook by Jarrett Brown titled, “Nazo State of Mind” amongst everything Nazareth it covers he got NewsOverCoffee in along with my dad’s “Circle of Success” so I wanted to say thank you and great work. Listen to it here.

Andy’s Fan Page – Andy had a special request for me this week, to be sure to let everyone know about the ALS Fundraising Event taking place today – read his post here. He also has all his standard sports recaps and schedules.

Clonehenge has a post on a rope-henge and an earlier one from a recap week I missed I do want to mention. It is from Germany, more specifically Baden-Wurttemberg. Many of German settlers in the Nazareth area from the 1700s came from this part of Germany, travelled up the Rhine River to Rotterdam, then sailed to the Port of Philadelphia, and came here in search of farmland. Guess that means our next crop circle will be in the shape of a henge, or something like that.

House to Home is getting ready for the holidays (aren’t we all – so much fun!)

Steaming Cup was focused on the President’s visit to the Valley this week.

Lehigh Valley Ramblings had extensive coverage of Barak O’Bama’s visit and his consistently good coverage of County government – don’t think anyone else covers it better. He also mentioned he is now receiving press credentials for these events.

Maker Diaries announces that a master lego builder will be at the Moravian Book Shop on December 12, but the event is already sold-out. Hopefully some works will be left on display for others to see.

Tatamy Happenings notes that the tree lighting is today with festivities beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Weird Nazareth has a photo round-up of what they found on the ground in Nazareth this year. Interesting.

Have a great week! Should be lots of activity with the holidays fast approaching!

House Fire on Bank Street

Both the Express-Times (read it here) and The Morning Call (read it here) report on the house fire that occurred just before noon on Saturday at 419/421 Bank Street. The home was a double and the fire began and gutted one side and caused smoke damage to the other.

Both families were displaced from their homes last night. No cause was determined and the fire is under investigation.

Crusade by Robyn Young

Crusade (Brethren Trilogy book 2) Crusade by Robyn Young

My rating: 3 of 5 stars I started with book three not realizing this was a trilogy, so having finished Crusade by Robyn Young, I've finished the cycle. Crusade was not as compelling to me as Brethren (Book 1) or Fall of the Templars (Book 3), but it did provide a lot of understanding for book 3. While Book 1 is about Will Campbell becoming a Templar, Book 2 is Will Campbell as a Templar. Moreover, it explains his quick rise as a Templar. The book is set in the Middle East with the Christians from the West attempting to hold their final lands against Baybars' Mamlucks. The Mamlucks are also confronted by the Mongols. Will's mentor Everard is with him and has rebuilt the Anima Templi, a secret society within the Templars that seeks peace between the people of the Book. Also central to this story is Will's secret wife Elwen and their child Rose. As a Templar, Will is not allowed to marry or have children so this secret must be kept. Elwen has moved to the city to be near Will and is employed by a merchant. In addition to the evil of the Mamlucks, Garin de Lyons returns at King Edward's command and causes all manner of problems for Will with both the Templars and Elwen. The book covers a long period of time and is slow at times, but all in all a decent enough book to get a three. The rating is the same that I gave the others, but if I had to rank them - book 3, 1, then 2. View all my reviews >>

O'Brien Murder Case

Both the Express-Times (read it here) and the Morning Call (read it here) report on the O’Brien murder case.

DNA evidence from suspect Mark Williams’ boot, matches O’Brien. Further, defense attorneys are trying to suppress Williams admission of guilt and evidence acquired, including the DNA results.

MC on Corey Lewis

Previously I mentioned that I was working with Bushkill Twp driver Corey Lewis (read the post here), today Keith Groller of the Morning Call reported on Corey’s quest to transition from Karting to professional open-wheel racing (read the article here).

While we were unable to get the funding together for Corey to compete in races 2 and 3 of the Formula Mazda Winter Series this weekend in Phoenix, AZ, it looks promising that Corey will participate in the Star Mazda Championship Open Test in Sebring in late January.

The series released its 2010 calendar recently and a big change from last season is that there will be two events held in conjunction with the Indy Racing League and a third will be in Indianapolis the night before the 500. These additions more closely align the series with the IRL. The Star Mazda Championship is the equivalent of AA baseball with some drivers advancing direct to top tier series and others first moving to IndyLights.

If your company is interested in sponsoring Corey, there are a variety of levels that can be accommodated. Contact me at Nunamaker.ross@att.net or learn more at www.coreylewisracing.com

Nazareth Area Holiday House Tour

NAZARETH AREA HOLIDAY HOUSE TOUR

The 2nd annual Nazareth Area Holiday House Tour will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2009, from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The Nazareth Cultural and Arts Commission has established this fundraiser to support the Nazareth Center for the Arts located at 30 Belvidere Street. Volunteers have been working diligently during the past year to transform this building, which previously housed the Vigilance Hose Company No. 1, into an art gallery and venue for musical performances. In addition to the Nazareth Center for the Arts, nine other properties will be included on the house tour. Four homes are located in Nazareth and five in Bushkill Township. An added feature in each home will be art displayed by a local artist and live music performed by local musicians.

Tickets for this holiday event cost $20 and include a multi-page booklet with maps and descriptions of the homes. During the advance sale currently in progress, tickets can be purchased at five Nazareth businesses. They are Brian’s Professional Floor Covering, 101 S. Broad Street; Copiers Inc Café & Deli, 6 S. Main Street; Donahoe Farms Floral & Garden, 589 East Lawn Road; Nazareth Borough Office, 134 S. Main Street; and Nazareth Floral Design, 66 S. Main Street. On the day of the tour, tickets will only be available at the Nazareth Center for the Arts, 30 Belvidere Street.

May the spirit of the Christmas season fill you with joy as you join us on this holiday house tour on December 12th.
