Nazareth Days

The annual summer gathering of Nazareth Days began this week with Sidewalk Sales and the Sunflower Stroll and will end on Saturday evening with fireworks (bigger and better than ever from what I understand).

Friday night is the Block Party on Belvidere between Main and Broad Streets.

Saturday features several activities including: arts & crafts show, antique car show, swimming events, and hot shot contest at the Borough Park. The Vigilance Hose sponsors the Poker Run road rally with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life (all day ride beginning at noon). In the Circle there is entertainment beginning at 8:45 and running through 3:00 p.m. which includes Dream Kids, the Swinging Nazarenes, Claude Shappelle (guitar and singing) Henry Laurito (accordion), and the Community Brass Ensemble.

As noted yesterday the Insomniak Theatre will be performing Metamorphoses in the Park's amphitheatre each evening.

Enjoy!

Wanted to bring this comment to the main post:

The events the Fire Company are doing are two seperate events, The POKER RUN starts at 1pm and registration is at the Vigilance Hose Social club located behind the firehouse. The Poker Run benefits "Relay for Life Cancer Society" and is strictly for Motorcycles. The ROAD RALLY starts at 4pm and meets at the Borough Park. The Road Rally is for any vehicle and benefits the fireworks and the fire company equipment fund. Again these are two seperate events starting at different times and leaving from different areas. Hope everyone enjoys the fireworks and all activities during Nazareth Days. Have a great time!!!!

Metamorphoses Performed at Borough Park

The Morning Call has an article on the Insomniak Theatre Company's upcoming performance of Metamorphoses, which will be performed at the Nazareth Borough Park (read it here).

The Troupe had to create a wading pool as the performance takes place in the water. They will perform at the amphitheatre Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening and tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children and seniors.

Polo Demonstration at Edgewood Valley Farm

I came across a blog post by Brigita McKelvie (read it here), which notes an Introduction to Polo Demonstration will be held at Edgewood Valley Farm (located off route 946, behind Gracedale) on Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m.

Edgewood Valley has held rodeo at their farm for the community for several years, the Intro to Polo sounds like a very interesting event as well.

Announcement Correction

Received a note from the Nazareth Moravian Church in regard to an announcment in the US and Key - please note the following will take place on Nazareth Day, July 18 (not 19 as the announcment reads):

"The Outreach Committee of the Nazareth Moravian Church is pleased to announce that they will again be providing Children’s Activities on July 19th from 10 am to 2 pm, during the Nazareth Days’ Festival. There will be a moon bounce and a dunk tank.

We will also be offering a free Child Identification Program (CHIP). CHIP is operated by the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation which gives law enforcement and recovery officials the necessary materials to find missing children. All items generated during a CHIP event are given to the child’s family. No copies are retained by the Masons or any government agency. "

Fireworks Will Explode

The meeting has ended and the fireworks are on this year.

The Council Fire Committee, chaired and led by Larry Stoudt, was joined by Vigilance Hose, Kiwanis, and Norm Boell from Kool Treats. They met this evening to discuss the Nazareth Day Concessions and Fireworks.

Following an hour long discussion and in the best interest of establishing an amicable resolution, Kool Treats offered to remove the truck and not sell soft ice-cream in the park from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the parties resolved that the fireworks would go on.

At the end of the meeting all parties agreed to move forward with the best interest of the community in mind.

The Vigilance Hose and Kiwanis will be meeting with the Fire Committee to discuss events and activities for 2010 in September/October (while not discussed it is probable the Halloween Parade will go on as planned).

5th Annual Barony of Rose Sale

The Rotary Club is holding its rose sale this weekend, in advance of Repayment Day on June 24. The original tract of land was granted to Letitia Penn from her brothers under a feudal system that required her to demonstrate her allegiance to them by providing one red rose per year on June 24th.

Rotary Club President Patrick Russamano said roses will be sold for $3.50 apiece and be available at Center Square, Nazareth YMCA, the KNBT branch on Broad Street, Moravian Hall Square, the Nazareth 7-Eleven, Nazareth Diner and the Wal-Mart on Route 248 in Northampton Crossings.

Memorial Day Parade

Hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! Excepting the fact that Marco got taken out on lap one, which had to have been horribly disappointing for him as it was for all of us who had been waiting month long for the race ours was very good as well.

Enjoyed the Memorial Day Parade on Monday. The applause from the crowd for the servicemen and veterans was very nice. There were council members, the mayor, a beauty pageant winner who graduated from Nazareth, boy scouts, cub scouts, girl scouts, brownies, the Nazareth High School Marching Band and I'm assuming the Middle School Band (there were two from Nazareth), and vehicles from fire, ambulance and rescue from communities serving the Nazareth Area (Borough, Tatamy, Stockertown, Upper, Lower, and Bushkill).

The parade started with a ceremony at the VFW and ended with one at Council Chambers.

Together for Derek - 5k Run/Walk

Thanks to the reader that forwarded along information on the "Together for Derek" 5K Run/Walk (view registration form here):

Together for Derek.org is a non-profit organization created to raise awareness and funds to support cancer research.

In April of 2006, Nazareth Area High School graduate and basketball player Derek Kehoe was diagnosed with LMS. He lost his battle in late October at the young age of 19. Leiomyosarcoma is a rare form of cancer, which affects about four people in every million. It spreads through the blood stream and can affect the lungs, liver, blood vessels, or any other soft tissue in the body. Presently there is no cure, only remission if it can be attained, and this rare cancer can reappear anywhere at any time. Because of its rarity, few doctors know how to treat it and it attracts very little research.

To raise money for Leiomyosarcoma awareness and research, a 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Northampton Community College. Please plan to join us!!!
