03-30-06 - BoroughCouncil - Workshop

The Nazareth Borough Council held its monthly workshop meeting on Thursday, March 30, 2006 in the Council Chambers (Center & Church Streets).

Of intrigue: Councilman Samus reported that an individual who illegally dumped garbage in the Yard Waste Recycling Center was caught and will be billed for the time it took borough workers to remove the garbage. The cuprit was caught because personal address information was in the garbage. He also reported that four workers will be on duty at the Yard during regular hours of operation and the working, including fencing will be completed in the near future. The Yard is located on the West End of Nazareth (off Spring Street).

Motorists: The Borough Engineer reported that the paving will begin next week on Green & Prospect Streets. Having pulled out of Rite Aid prior to the meeting and having turned north onto Green I can attest that you could do alot of damage right now to your car as the pavement is stripped and covers are a good six to eight inches high in the middle of the road. So beginning Monday, don't avoid those road closed signs.

Potential Future Controversy? Reverend Matz reported that the finance committee will be putting forward a motion to authorize the development of an architectural draft of needs for a new Police and Borough building. The current locations are at Church and Center and along Belvidere between Main and Broad and some talk had been made of moving these to the area where the Yard Center is located (on the outskirts of town nearest Gracedale), so they could be built new as opposed to having to renovate an existing facility.

New Community Organization? Cindy Werner reported that the Economic Development Committee in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce is continuing to pursue the creation of a Main Street Program. The Council will be required to initially support this effort financially with the intent that the organization will become self-sustaining thereafter. A resolution will be put forward to this effect. Also, Bill Brackbill of the Chamber has written a draft of the application and it is being preliminarily reviewed. It will go to the EDC for review and then a recommendation will be made to Council whether or not to submit to the state. A public and announced meeting will be held to gather as much community input as possible during the review.

Historically Speaking: The Borough will continue to pursue the hiring of a town historian.

Around Town: You may notice a few changes around town. The bid for new Street lights around the Circle was accepted and rewarded. Work should begin soon. Also, bids will be going out for a new stage at the Borough Park. And finally, the Essroc fields will be finished soon and grass planted this spring. Once complete regulation soccer fields will be available here.

If you have any thoughts or comments on what is happening - feel free to post a comment. If you feel real strongly about it - come to the next meeting and voice your opinion.
