09-05-06 Council Public Comment

The period of public comment was short and restrained as compared to recent meetings.

A request was made to have permission to use the Circle for a Candlelight Vigil for Thursday evening. It is a part of a nation-wide show of support for victims of oppression in Sudan.

The event will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and 20 to 40 people are expected to attend.

Council approved the event.

A representative from Aflac wanted to offer aflac to borough employees, but paid by the employees, not the borough. It was recommended to take the presentation to the finance committee.

A member from the Citizens Committee wanted to clarify remarks made on Thursday's workshop. Made two proposals, 2nd featured a management firm. Standard on business side, but may not be in public. Not being expert in this, it was defered to Solicitor Pierce and phrased as skirting the law. This terminology confused some individuals. A revised project cost was submitted using prevailing wage, thereby raising the cost but keeping it under the cost of the Council committee proposal. Group wanted to be within the law and felt Express-Times article misrepresented the group.

The public comment ended with Council President Dan Chiavaroli reading a pair of letters submitted to Council.

The first was from the Rotary Club, who thanked the Council and Borough for its assistance in helping them wih their sweat-equity program to help beautify the community. The Rotary will celebrate the 100th annivesary of Rotary International on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. on the Circle. The ceremony will last 10 to 15 minutes.

The second was from Dr. Hoch, who submitted a four page handwritten letter, advocating the preservation of open space relating to the new government center proposal.
