Two recent posts have generated some good conversation, and I want to thank everyone regardless of their position for keeping them constructive.
The first was in regard to elementary specials and the overcrowding of classes in some cases (read it here). The readers have seemed to confirm that in some cases these classes have been over-crowded with 30+ students and another interesting issue was raised, that being the computer classes, which previously had a computer teacher are now taught by the classroom teacher (leading some to wonder what happened to the computer teacher and another to point out that Lower Nazareth has converted its lab to a classroom).
There were good points made for mixing the classes, which may want to be considered in the future. At the elementary level students are primarily with their class all day, as a result the issue of who has which teacher becomes very important. If specials were mixed, they'd have that in addition to lunch and recess, giving them an opportunity to meet more students in school and acclimating them for middle school. The final point made in the conversation was that some parents will be attending the next School Board meeting so if you are, please be sure to send me an email or post comments to let us all know what happened.
The second was in regard to the recent purchase of an electric hybrid bus (read it here). One point I'll make here that I didn't in the post is that Jenning's Transportation (with whom I worked with during my tenure at the School District as Director of Administrative Services) got a whale of deal (and good for them for being able to negotiate it) in being able to purchase a $200,000+ bus for the cost they purchase a standard one ($67,000).
The initial issue raised was the decision by the district to spend $14,000 to be "green". The conversation discussed the role of government in leading initiatives that over time will be good for all vs. the responsibility of government entities (like a school district) in spending taxpayers money. Not to mention in what areas that money ought to be spent.
Again thanks to everyone who commented to date and feel free to return to these articles to post additional comments if you haven't already.

NASD has been noted to be the first in a few areas such as block schedule(now the trend is turning towards unblocking math, so math will be a full year subject, makes you wondering about the testing scores at the high school. Also, the first to purchase the "green" bus which might be a good thing.
Although money spent here and there does add up while money saved now there and here will be add up too. Does the middle school need to be so lit up when closed to activity?
Maybe this month the teachers of nasd will be on strike for the first time ever too. Should be an interesting topic. However, it does appear that NASD administration is becoming top heavy maybe the books by Dr. Laurence J. Peter :The Peter Principle" and "The Peter Pyramid" might shed light on this matter as well.
And this story is bubbling to the top, too ...
Sinkhole could damage future school lot
A 30-foot-wide depression in the Nazareth Area High School field hockey field in Upper Nazareth Township could mean a sinkhole in the new middle school’s parking lot if the problem isn’t resolved. The hole will be tested for future problems in the next two weeks, school officials said. The field hockey field will become a parking lot for the seventh- and eighth-grade building to be built on Friedenstahl Avenue by 2009. The whole middle school site will be tested for sinkholes. The field can be used for practice, school officials said.
Very interesting, but where did you get the information from? It looks like it was quoted from a publication but I did a very quick search and couldn't find anything.
If you have a link to post that would be great.
Keep on sippin'

Thank you - and no wonder I couldn't find it quickly. You need to scroll way, way down.
The article regarding the sinkhole was in today's Express-Times section B1 under "news briefs." Certainly sinkholes are not new to this area.
From the Morning Call ...
Nazareth teachers threaten strikeTeachers in the Nazareth Area School District will go on strike if their union can't reach an agreement with the district administration by the end of a negotiation session scheduled for Sept. 21.
The strike would begin Monday, Sept. 25, the district said in a news release today.

The teachers' contract expired Aug. 31, three days after students went back to school. The teachers have been at work during negotiations.
