The Nazareth Area School District email announcement system this morning sent a message indicating a 2 hour delay for Monday, February 5, 2007 due to inclement weather.
I know most people visit here after 8, but thought I'd post it since I wasn't expecting this.

You weren't the only person "expecting this". I took my daughter to the bus stop this morning. It was awfully quiet. We waited for about 5 minutes and then I took her to the YMCA (she goes there after school) after someone from across the street told us that NASD was 2-hr delay.
If there is a "weather event" I am apt to check WFMZ.com for delays. But I never thought to check on the basis that it was too cold. I never check my email before school and sometimes don't check my email on Sunday night (especially when it happens to be the night of the Super Bowl).
I can understand snow. The buses need time for the plows to get out and clear the roads. But cold weather?! I mean, how much "warmer" is it going to be at 9:30? Is there a temperature line, under which school will be delayed? Say, under 10F? Will there be early dismissals for unseasonably warm weather?
Some people need to complain about everything, especially if it involves NASD!

I don't like to complain about everything. However, I think it's pretty silly to have school delayed for cold weather. Snow/ice is one thing. Cold weather is entirely another.
My point is that I don't think I was the only one who was caught unaware. We have a short enough school day as it is. Did we need to make it even shorter for cold weather? More importantly, did the 2hrs make any difference in the temperature?

To be fair, there was a wind chill advisory this morning. It would be unsafe for students to be outside at bus stops or walking to school for any longer than 15 minutes, because of frostbite.
The way I found out is that I turned to channel 69 after the Superbowl, and there were delays on the screen. Otherwise, my kids would have left for school as normal this morning.
I think it surprised a lot of people, and since tomorrow morning is forecast to be colder, it may happen again.
There are still some students that DO have to WALK to school. IN 0 degree temp. I am grateful for a 2 hour delay
There were over a 100 delays this morning from various school districts.
As a parent you have a responsiblity to keep yourself informed of your surroundings, this includes the weather..be it cold or snow/ice.
Announcements of the delay were made via email, the district webpage, tv news channels and the radio.
It was a good decision for the delay.
I too was grateful for the 2 hour delay. The wind chill advisory was issued and it was deemed dangerous for people to be out any more than 15 minutes. The delay was called last night and I received my e-mail at 11:00 pm so my children knew before bed to set their alarms for later (high school age). In addition, the tv stations were running the delays although 69 was late with posting ours (Channel 16 and WCAU in Philly had it much earlier). Since every school in the area had a delay, I imagine this must be a standard response to the combination of temperatures and wind chill.
I agree with the previous poster. We have many children who walk to school in the Boro, that do not have parents that can take them to school. Having the sun out for a couple of hours surely raised the temperature a bit.
I agree some people do look for any reason to bash the school district, and Lord knows the district gives them plenty of opportunities. However, this is not one of them. Nearly every district had a delay this morning, and as a parent of 2 elementary school children, I am glad they did.
Come on guys, save the NASD bashing for real issues, not this.
I agree with 12:27. Get over it naysayers. This decision was in the best interest of the kids. Isn't and shouldn't that be our main concern. Parents who work have the responsibility of checking on school delays. The district has made it east enough to do through their email notifications. Working parents should check every morning before they leave for work. Other issues besides weather can come into play here....ie lack of heat, water problems, etc. that can result in late starts, closings, etc,
At least it has given the pool debate a rest for the day and something new to be disgruntled about.
The 2 hour delay gave the pool debate a rest and the pool debate has given the teacher's contract a break....scary how we just jump topics...In the fall the teacher's contract was a HUGE issue...last I knew their was no official agreement on the contract. Interesting with all the talk about a budget that noone is concerned about the teacher's contract.
FYI - Channel 69 already has a list of delays for Tuesday running. NASD isn't there yet, but probably will be.
Wow, my only point was that I don't expect delays and cancellations unless there is snow or sleet or something I can see, so I was surprised to have the email this morning. That's not to say it was a bad decision.
Given that, I posted it here figuring some others wouldn't be thinking delay either, but I also knew most people don't visit here before 8 so I wasn't sure of what value it was.
We often walk, but typically from Jan to March we do drive because it does get cold. Not everyone has that option.
So again, I'm not bashing the decision, I was just trying to spread the word about it.
On the flip side though, Brad does make a point. It didn't get much warmer all day as a matter of fact the accuweather service at the bottom of the page indicated 14 degrees with a real feel of 4 this morning and now (3:30 pm.) indicates 14 degrees with a real feel of minus 4, so it got 8 degrees colder over the course of the day, not warmer.
It's "stupid" cold. You'd be stupid to be out in it unless you had to be and I saw a lot of people who work outdoors today and I felt bad for every one of them. It is also unusual.
Don't be surprised for more delays until this cold passes and it warms up (to something more bearable like the 20s;-)
The pool was frozen today. Instead they were playing hockey on it. Go Rangers!
I think everyone should take note of the districts lack of notification.
The delays for almost ALL the surrounding schools started to post on WFMZ shortly after the end of the Super Bowl.
Nazareth did not post until around 5:15 AM Monday morning.
The news labelled the wind chill as hazardous and warned against anyone being outside with exposed skin. That means children at bus stops.
There is a reason ALL the schools delayed.
Now today, most of the same schools have already started announcing 2 hour delays, many posted around 2:30 PM today.
But not Nazareth.
Is the administration expecting a freak heat wave to possibly hit us between now and the morning?
I think this goes directly to the point made that this administration has difficulty making even the most simple of decisions.
I for one have already called a 2 hour delay for my kids. I think given the extreme cold temperatures we are expecting over the next couple of days, it is better to err on the side of caution. A piece of advice that maybe the administration should listen to.
Not true. I received an 11:00 pm e-mail and it was on WCAU Philadelphia tv station before 11pm and on Channel 16-Scranton also. Not sure why it was not on WFMZ, but it is possible it was WFMZ's error.
I am amazed that there are so many comments regarding the school delay. Yes Nazareth is notorious for waiting until the last minute. When there is 5 inches of snow on the ground and still snowing, pretty much all the schools post it on the infotel or the news media. Nazareth would always wait. It is so frustrating because it is nice to know about the delay before you go to bed. The kids can adjust the alarms.
I am also amazed about all these comments. Look what is happening with the Municipal Authority in this town and does anyone care about that. Hopefully someone from the public will ask the Council about it tonight.
if in doubt just check the NASD website. It was on there last night.
