The Express-Times' JD Malone today reports that Nazareth Police Chief Bruce Ruch recently had surgery that resulted in the amputation of his leg due to severe blood clots (read the article here).
Ruch noted that as a result of the surgery he did not anticipate being able to continue in his position as Police Chief and expected to retire.
He remains in the hospital and will undergo further evaluation of his other leg.
It is anticipated that Detective Alan Koch will be appointed to serve as interim Chief.
The article includes many comments from other officials more about the character and friendship they've had with Chief Ruch than with his role as Chief. It is obviously a difficult time and I can only wish him the best as I too appreciate his efforts, demeanor and most of all character.

Although Chief Ruch is a public figure, I found this article to be true yellow journalism and appalling. I think the Ruch family has had to endure a lot of hardship recently and seeing this on the front page is in the worst possible taste. Those who sincerely have Chief Ruch's personal well being in heart would respect his privacy as well as his family's......
One side of being a public official is that you get very little privacy and that is unfortunate.
I didn't see the print version, only the online article and from it you don't know where it is placed in the print edition and how it is presented.
The quotes from others were very positive and while I'm not a personal friend, they did echo my opinion of how he carries and handles himself. He is always helpful and involved in much more than people probably realize in his role as chief.
