Writing Contest #1: On Nazareth

For the most part I've posted news and information about Nazareth, but I've not written about Nazareth itself on NewsOverCoffee. The reason is that my purpose for this site is to share news and information.

I do, however, love to read and write and before starting this site had regularly participated in contests on writing.com to hone my skills.

Occassional requests have been made by readers to write about Nazareth the place, instead of only report on it. Having done some research recently, I learned that the term placeblog actually was created by a group of writers, essayists and poets, not media folk trying to foster citizen-journalism.

Considering this along with the Nazareth Downtown Association's current task (among many) of further developing its draft mission and seeking to articulate the specific elements that make our community unique compared to others, I thought now is the perfect time to attempt a writing contest.

I know from past attempts that most people prefer reading, some comment, and few want to post, so I'll lay this out in several ways. Email (editor@newsovercoffee.com) or post, and be sure to let me know if you'd like your writing posted to the site or not, and if you'd like to be personally credited for the writing or keep it anonymous. I will then collect all the entries for the NDA to review and consider when finalizing their mission.

Entry length is at the discretion of the writer, but 150 words should be the target. The topic: "What makes Nazareth, Nazareth?"

The only prize is ego-gratification. I'll have the active participants at the next NDA meeting read and select the one that they believe best captures the essence of Nazareth. If a single winner cannot be determined, multiple winners will be announced.

No pressure. No worries. Simply take some time to craft some words and tell us "What makes Nazareth, Nazareth?" And of course, I ask that you keep it positive and constructive. I'm not seeking humor or sarcasm and posted comments of that nature will be removed.

I look forward to hearing from everyone and I'm going to get to work on my own.

Best wishes, good luck, and thanks for helping NDA brainstorm!

The favorite red rose is appropriately emblematical of the 5000 acres which are participants of its fragrance, it is in reality a Manor "blooming as the rose" and not equalled by any other portion of equal extent in the five million acres that Northampton County encircled in 1752.

It was then, and in a great measure is yet, the garden, the Eden, the paradise of the whole. It was the first tract of land purchased expressly for the amolioration of the condition of a portion of the human family. It was here upon this Tract where the creator of the universe was first invoked to bless those efforts; It was here where Christian Froelich first instructed the Indian Inhabitants in the knowledge of the true God.

Matthew Henry, 1851 in the Manuscript History of Northampton County Pennsylvania.

Henry was a student at Nazareth Hall Academy and his writing about Nazareth tells of the origins as well as describing places then in the wild that are now part of town.

Thought this was interesting as he too was obviously very impressed with the town in which he lived.
