Thanks to the reader who pointed out the article by Kelly-Anne Suarez of the Morning Call (read it here) regarding the Skate Park in Nazareth.
The article discusses the project as being renewed, but in reality, it has simply been under the radar compared to the new Government Building, Teacher's Strike, and Middle School Building, but it has been referenced and referred to at Council meetings since last year.
I've been torn between the good of some versus many. It seems the skate park will serve a limited number of people, but then again so do many other athletic facilities. On the other hand, it seems if we have it there will no longer be an excuse to allow/tolerate illegal skateboarding in the borough. So I hope when this goes through it will be utilized and appreciated and enforced.
While the site has been located at the Borough Park all along, I personally suggested placing it on the slab of broken concrete off South Green Street across from the fields, but it didn't work out. I thought it would be a good place, near the new police station and an improvement to an eyesore. Thought we might even be able to get a skate shop or affiliated apparel stores nearby (I know the knocks, a tattoo shop, but hey its a half block up the road would be good for business;-).

So one more time, what do you think? The good news is that other communities have contributed. The bad news is some of them have failed to fully support the library, but opened their arms to a skate park. To me that is not right, but what do you think?

I think positively the new skate park will be an absolutely great venue for the skate athletes of the community. I hope they all realize how hard Mr Herbst has worked to bring this project to completion. When it is finished they will have a state of the art park in which to polish their talents. From then on there will be no reason for them to skate in the parts of the town that are posted "no skating". So we can expect that problem to end and if it doesn't then we should expect that all the rules be enforced to the fullest by a cooperating police patrol, and cooperating parents. Respect of town and personal property has been neglected and it should not be.
Is there a difference between kids with skateboards who don't respect the rules and readers of this site who don't?
I've asked time and again not to attack individuals or call people names, yet it continues.
If you are going to criticize kids for being disrespectful at the very least don't do the same in the process.
I for one am glad that these skaters will have somewhere to go other than our streets. I can't wait to contact the police everytime I see one of these disrespectful kids skating in a posted area.
As a lifelong resident of Nazareth, I am outraged at how the majority of these skaters behave. Politeness is definitely not a word in their vocabulary. Maybe they should pick up a book as something to fall back on, because face it- none of them will ever become the next Tony Hawk!
Let's build a skatepark in "historic" Nazareth, it won't take long for trouble from neighboring communities to arrive.
Every one of these deleted comments was done so because one or more people had to attack someone individually and call them names.
I'm amazed that these same people are so against kids who skate for being disrespectful when they themselves appear to be the role models.
Discuss the merits of the skate park. Discuss how the money should be spent. Discuss constructive ways to ensure the park is used and not left empty. Discuss ways enforcement can be made once the park is up and running. Discuss the fact that not one Council person in my memory opposed this plan.
And do it in a civil manner. Pretty simple request and it'd be appreciated if you could respect it not only by me, but by everyone who reads these posts and comments.
This absolutely disgusts me that posts have to be removed because individuals take it upon themselves to launch personal attacks, there by stooping to the low level they accuse those attacked at being at.
Although, I am not surprised. Since moving to the area, I have seen on way to many occasions where a person's first reaction is to personally attack a another person, thank go only verbally, but attack none the less.
Give the kids a skate park. I think it is a great idea to give them a location where they can do their thing without causing trouble for those in locations where they are not wanted or should not be.
If you think they shouldn't have the park, then I suggest we remove all soccer, football, baseball, wrestling, etc. venues as well. After all, it is a place where kids can gather and possibly cause trouble.
It's the 21st century folks. Time to come out of the dark ages and realize the world doesn't revolve around only you.
Every place I have lived has had a skate park, and guess what? It was only on the rarest of occasion that there was any trouble there.
Get rid of your pre-conceived notions and open your mind up a little. You might be surprised by what you might learn.
To heck with the kids, I can't wait to ride there! (age 32) ;-)
Honestly, this should have been built in the 90's. I seriously can't believe it took this long. I do however give Nazareth and Mr Herbst a huge amount of credit for leading the way!
Does anyone know of an official website or page with more detailed info, ie. What type of terrain / obsticles, who is building it, etc?
@ Library - its my opinion that libraries are a dinosaur of a past era. I haven't needed a library since I graduated college some years back. Don't get me wrong I do believe they have their place, but I simply have no need for one when I currently do 100% of my research online. And to contrast my life to others, I'll likely spend more time at our new skate park than our library.
