On Trick or Treating

Last night's trick or treating couldn't have had better weather and for the first hour it was fairly light out making it a bit safer especially for those navigating some not so always even sidewalks in costume.

For the first hour I gave out candy while my wife took the girls around the block. I was glad to see that everyone I encountered was dressed up, said trick or treat, and followed up with thank you (or were reminded by a parent to do so).

Unfortunately for our dog, it is her least favorite night of the year. She is not used to being leashed in the yard (nor being allowed at the front of the house near the street) and doesn't like people coming to the front of the house (must be the Shepard in her), so she spent a lot of her time barking, panting, and whimpering.

She did give a few eager trick or treaters pause and when I told them they had to get past the dog to get the candy. The wonder in their faces was priceless.

The second hour I took the kids and my wife stayed at home, though we put the dog on the deck in the back where she barked because she couldn't see what was going on.

We walked South New Street north to Belvidere and while we didn't get through much of town, I can't imagine many blocks had done up Halloween like the section on Belvidere from New to Whitefield. It seemed like every house was decorated and a few had music and lights. My younger daughter, dressed as a princess, had no interest in scary lights or music so we stayed on the south side of the block.

We then walked up Whitefield to Center and later down to Belvidere and home with some stops at friends houses along the way.

Seeing people out, being polite and wishing one another well was wonderful.

Of course I can only speak for myself, but I hope everyone had as enjoyable a night as we did.

I agree with your sentiment. As I struggled to keep up with my 4 year old boy going house to house( he was ahead of his older sisters) I took time to appreciate seeing all my neighbors, most of whom I dont know. My dog has similiar issues with halloween and was happily curled up back in my car in the garage. I have only lived here in Tatamy Borough for 2 years now and have come to appreciate the feel of a small town that still does things like a small town. As all the fire and police vehicles were lined up on the streets for safety and to hand out candy and lightsticks, it made me feel happy to be living here. One house not only gave my kids candy but had a "treat" for me, a political message about how the Tatamy Borough Council candidates responded to the League of Women Voters invitation to make a statement in their voters guide, only took advantage. Pretty intetersting and powerful statement, but im not sure how i felt about getting this, but what the heck...Thanks to all the volunteer fireman and police that were out last night making Tatamy safe and exciting for the kids.

We live in Nazareth and had a lovely evening out with our 19 month old son. South Green Street did a wonderful job decorating their houses, and nearly everyone was out on their porches handing out candy. We have such wonderful and lovely neighbors! It was such a warm and friendly atmosphere to celebrate a fun "holiday." Thanks to our entire community!
