PA American Water 12.5% Rate Hike

The Express-Times reports that the PA American Water Company is seeking a 12.5% rate hike and has a hearing before the Public Utility Commission to gain approval (read the article here).

The article notes:

Those who wish to participate must register by contacting the commission's Office of Consumer Advocate at 800-684-6560 by Sept. 1. The hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sept. 3. Consumers will be asked to provide a name, telephone number and the topic of their testimony.

I respect that companies have expenses and need to earn a certain amount of money, however, it doesn’t seem reasonable to request a rate hike that far exceeds an average annual raise that consumers could expect to earn through their employers.  Yesterday it was noted that PPL could increase as much as 40% when their cap is lifted, now water at 12.5%, and there is always the school district and medical insurance.

This is ridiculous. A few years back they billed us every 3 months and charged a $12 service fee and when they decided to bill monthly they charged a $12 service fee montly. My point is they stuck it to us then and now they want this kind of increase. I am so sick of the utility companies...it's not like we are paying for more...our service is still the same.

It must be because we have a drought right now.
