Celebrate National Library Week April 11-17, 2010

Received this note from Lynn Snodgrass-Pilla, Director of the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity. I’m pretty open about my support for the library and encourage everyone to take advantage of the services provided. We’ll be attending the Young Authors Contest Reception this week as both our daughters made entries. If you are unfamiliar with this event, children write and illustrate a book, submit two copies, and the winners receive one copy bound and the other they autograph and it becomes a part of the library’s collection. It is always exciting for them to see that someone has taken their book out or when a friend tells them they read their book. The library doesn’t guarantee it, but the past several years the Friends of the Library have published all the entries in addition to winners. I really think this is a great program and am very thankful for the library holding it each year.

On to the letter I wanted to share it with everyone:

April 11-17, 2010 communities across the country will celebrate National Library Week, a time to remind the public about the contribution libraries, librarians and library workers make to their communities every day.

In today’s tough economy, libraries offer free resources to help people find jobs and learn new skills.  People of all ages and backgrounds find entertainment, develop skills and come to find their place in the community.  People gather for book discussions, for storytime with their children or to volunteer or look for volunteer work.  Our library helps the community thrive.

What makes the library unique is access to trained professionals – librarians –  to help people find and interpret the information they need to make a difference in their lives.  Our libraries also help keep us connected, providing a space for people of all ages, classes and races to come together, while keeping us connected to events and people around the world.

Here are few of the of the events going on our Library next week:

  • April 13th National Library Workers Day stop by say hi!
  • April 14th Young Authors Contest Winners Reception 4 pm
  • April 14th  PA Reads One Book a Family Storyhour and craft featuring the book “What a Treasure” by Jane & Will Hillenbrand at 6:30 pm

How can the library help you thrive?   National Library Week is the perfect time to find out.  Communities thrive @ your library.

Respectfully,

Lynn Snodgrass-Pilla, Director
