District Seeding Football

Nazareth closed out a good regular season defeating rival Northampton, but the boost came from MVC’s Pleasant Valley, whose only loss coming into Friday was opening night to Nazareth. PV lost to Stroudsburg last night putting Nazareth and Whitehall to the 2 and 3 seeds for the district tournament. Easton has wrapped up the top spot.

Congrats to the Eagles and good luck this post season!

Guitar International Interviews Dick Boak

Dick Boak, head of artist relations at Martin Guitar was recently interviewed by Guitar International (read the interview here).

While it is not hard to believe Martin’s are famous, I think it isn’t so easy to understand/grasp just how world-renowned this local company is. This article addresses the signature line, how it started, and who has been involved.

Sweet as southern lemonade in one song, and bitter as a bat cave in the next.  Inky's sound is smoky, opaque, and to the bones blue. This New York City singer/songwriter will perform songs from her debut CD "Miss Fit". Police Lose 1 Full Time Officer in Borough

The Express-Times reports that the Nazareth Borough Council voted to not retain a new officer in his first year leaving the borough with 3 full-time, 2 disability, and multiple part-time officers (read the article here).

Chief Trachta indicated there wouldn’t always be an officer on duty and that he’d call on the State Police to help fill gaps.

I’m not certain if the staff numbers cited include the Chief, but it would seem that the significant increases in the police department over the past several years coupled with two officers being on disability has finally caught up to the department in regard to budget.

2010 Election

The votes are in and the pundits are now sounding off on what it all means.

In Pennsylvania, Republicans took the Governorship, held the Senate and took the State House. State Senators Lisa Boscola and Pat Browne won re-election by large margins. In the State House, Joe Emrick won the open seat formerly held by Rich Grucella, who retired.

Congressman Charlie Dent held his seat and former congressman Pat Toomey won a close race for US Senate.

On the federal level, Democrats held the Senate, but Republicans took the House winning over 60 seats, the most in 70+ years. In the House three incumbent committee chairmen were defeated as was longtime PA house member Paul Kanjorski. PA and Ohio both saw the Republicans take 5 seats from the Democrats.

And across the country, Republicans took 10 formerly Democratic Governorships compared to the two the Democrats took.

While the party of the President often struggles in the mid-term election, yesterday’s results were pretty significant. The shift in the House was nearly unprecedented and may set a record once all the races are decided. In PA, Republican control means the party will decide redistricting of seats next year. And looking forward to the 2012 Presidential election, the Republican advantage in Governors could play a big role.

At the end of the day, this election will only be significant if government at all levels is able to address the core issue of the economy with meaningful legislation, instead of simply spewing rhetoric to win the next election (or more likely in attempt to cast the other side as a greater evil).

Council Meeting

The Express-Times reports that a local business owner, Steve Nickles of the Internet Café and Deli on Broad Street, brought complaints and supporters to the Council meeting over violations he has received for holding an outdoors open mic night (read the article here).

Council changed an ordinance following earlier requests by Nickles, and the latest came after the change. According to the article, the new ordinance allows open mic until 10:00 p.m. and Nickles was cited at 9:15 p.m.

Council noted that since the ticket was issued, Nickles does need to appear and defend his case, but also noted that more communication between Council and police regarding the change may be necessary to ensure the new ordinance is applied correctly.
