Nazareth Blood Drive

*************** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***************

Action Karate In Nazareth Is Sponsoring Blood Drive

Nazareth, PA – February 5, 2011 – Action Karate in Lower Nazareth Township will be sponsoring a blood drive in conjunction with Miller-Keystone Blood Center at their school on Saturday, February 26th, 2011.  The blood drive is open to anyone in the community and donors may register ahead of the date on the school’s website, www.ActionKarateNazareth.com.

Seth and Dawn Bittner, the owners and operators of Action Karate in Nazareth, organized the blood drive to help increase local blood supplies and raise awareness for Kell, a substance in human blood that can causes severe hemolytic disease in newborn babies.  A mother that tests positive for Kell may develop antibodies against the red blood cells of her fetus, destroying those cells and fetal bone marrow while also causing fetal anemia. The only hope for the baby’s survival involves blood transfusions through the umbilical cord and then again, in the first months after birth.

The Bittners are proud supporters of a number of worthy causes including NAMI of Lehigh Valley (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense Systems), but raising awareness of Kell became a personal quest after learning that Seth Bittner’s brother, Shaughn, and niece Courtney, tested positive for the antigen.  Kell was also passed along to his sister-in-law, Beth, during Courtney’s birth.  This means that any future children the couple has, as well as any children Courtney has will probably require blood transfusions to survive.

Shaughn and Beth Bittner have already sent their thanks to Seth and Dawn Bittner, as well as all potential blood donors, “If it were not for these blood transfusions, our child probably would not survive.  Thanks to the donations of very special people, we can rest easy knowning that when needed, our child will receive the blood transfusion he needs in order to survive.”

School Board Director Election

A reader forwarded to me two pieces of information. One, about a workshop taking place on March 5 for current and prospective school board candidates, and two, information on local seats that are going to be up this year. Both are below.

In 2007, I offered a “Resident to Candidate” program featuring two elected officials and the chairs of both the Republican and Democratic parties in Northampton County. It was a free program and about 40 people showed up. While I don’t have updated information. I did create a page on my web site today where you can download the program notes I used and listen to audio. The audio is sometimes tough to hear, but if you have earbuds or headphones you should be good. The first part is about 10 minutes, and the other two are about twenty a piece.

Here are the two notes:

Candidates for School Board can begin circulating their petitions on February 15 and can pick them up from the County approximately one week before that date. They must file their petitions by 4:30 p.m. on March 8, 2011 at the Northampton County Election Bureau.

Auction Featured Items from the Peter's Home

Auction Central News reports on a recent auction which featured many items from Margaret Peter’s collection (read the post here).

From the article it is difficult to determine exactly which pieces came from Peter’s collection, but a sampling read:

On Friday night the sale began with a selection of English and Continental furniture and accessories primarily from the estate of Margaret M. Peters of Nazareth, Pa. Highlights included an English mahogany and silver mounted tea caddy bearing the touch of Pierre Gillios for $7,110, a pair of Dutch marquetry chairs for $1,422, a Georgian mahogany and walnut veneer looking glass for $2,370 and an impressive ormolu mounted porcelain three-piece garniture set brought $16,590

The one that really caught my eye (and again, wasn’t clear the original owner):

A rare United States $10 gold coin dated 1796 was offered to a full bank of phones together with bidders in the sales room and on the Internet. This stunning coin with draped bust, small eagle, reeded edge and 16 stars brought $42,660

Now that is a good investment.

Young Authors Contest

Received this note from the Library and would encourage everyone with kids to encourage them to participate. My daughters have entered this several years in a row and the Library does a great job. To date, the Friends of the Library along with some anonymous donors have stepped in to publish all entries. This is not a guarantee, but my daughters have enjoyed seeing their work published and entered into the library’s catalog. If you are curious about what the story should entail, feel free to search Nunamaker and check out one of their books.

Regional Police for the Borough

The Express-Times has another article on Nazareth Mayor Fred Daugherty encouraging Council to consider regionalization of the police force (read it here).

The primary driver according to the article is the fact that the cost of the department is up over 50% from six years ago coupled with the current force being comprised of three people with three vacancies.

I did have the opportunity to discuss this with the Mayor privately, and I can say from a general perspective that his interest is in determining if regionalization would be a benefit to the borough, and if so what impact it would have on the police coverage that people expect.

We spoke specifically about the differences between a township and borough and I noted as posted previously that my gut is to have a dedicated force, but at the same time my real concern is having dedicated service especially for the downtown and park, regardless of who is providing it.
