PBT School Rankings Released

The Pittsburgh Business Times has released its annual school rankings (read the release here) and the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia suburbs dominate the top-tier.

According to the release, "the Pittsburgh Business Times uses its formula to rank every district in the state based on three years of PSSA (Pennsylvania System of Student Assessment) test scores."

The PSSA tests taken in the spring of 2007 would most likely not be included in this listing as they have not been released to the best of my knowledge and the report was released mid-May meaning they would have needed some time to prepare the numbers/rankings.

498 out of 500 districts were rated (two were not included because they did not have a high school and therefore a comparison couldn't be made with those that did).

Allegheny County had three of the top four (and six in the top 20) including top ranked Upper St. Clair. Chester County outside Philadelphia had two in the top six (and three in the top 20), and Bucks had three in the top 20.

The Lehigh Valley, Northampton and Lehigh Counties, were led by Parkland in 30th (see a list of all Valley schools below) and five schools were in the top 15% (75th or better). I think if you had to label these schools, they'd be the best in the area based on these results.

Two schools, of which Nazareth was one (ranked 144th), were ranked at the bottom of the top third (call it 'above-average), three were ranked right in the middle (from 227-264 - 'average'), and the remaining seven districts were in the bottom 40% (from 298-483 - 'below average').

According to these results it would seem that Nazareth has areas of improvement that can be made and it will be interesting to see how the new results will impact the ranking next year - for better or worse.

There had been some discussion of un-blocking Math, which would be a step in the right direction, though probably the better step would be getting off block scheduling all together (Parkland does have a traditional 50 minute or so bell schedule, not sure of the others at the top) as this fad doesn't seem to have any demonstrated benefits.

Again, maybe these rankings will prompt some discussion at the Board meeting or in the election regarding what can be done to improve the quality of education and get Nazareth into the 'best in the area' group of schools and move us further away from the 'average' ones.

Lehigh Valley Rankings (out of 500 districts and 498 ranked, let me know if I missed anyone as I had to scroll through all 500):
  1. Parkland - 30
  2. Southern Lehigh - 61
  3. Salisbury - 67
  4. Saucon Valley - 68
  5. East Penn (Emmaus) - 71

Ross-

I missed this over the weekend. These numbers do not suprise me and seem to confirm my PSSA analysis from back in Nov 2006. See link here

My analysis included a few additional schools that you missed Ross (Palisdades, Quakertown, Pennridge & Upper Perk). These school districts (along with the original 17 in the post comprise the 21 school districts that the Morning Call uses in the Real Estate section of the Sunday paper.

I went back to that Nov analysis to check the 2006 composite scores for proficient+advanced in reading. For my analysis, I took the PSSA score for each grade (3-8,11) and compared the percentage proficient and above amongst all area school districts. For example, Parkland's 11th grade tests showed 69.0% proficient and above in Math and 84.4% proficient and above in Reading. Comparing these scores to the other district's 11th grade scores resulted Parkland "ranking" 3rd and 1st in Math and Reading Respectively. By comparison, Nazareth was 11th and 4th in Math and Reading scores. I repeated this for each grade, assigning a "ranking" for each school's grade level tested. The composite is the average of all rankings of a particular school. Again, using Parkland as an example (because that's what NASD likes to do), they had the following rankings for proficient and above in Math and Reading:

3rd: M-5th, R-5th
4th: M-7th, R-10th
5th: M-4th, R-6th
6th: M-3rd, R-2nd
7th: M-1st, R-1st
8th: M-3rd; R-2nd
11th:M-3rd; R-1st

The "composite" score was then the average of all the rankings. In the case of Parkland, it was 3.79

The composite rankings of the area school districts are below (lower number is better):

School District Comp Rankings
Parkland Rank Avgs. 3.79
Palisades Rank Avgs. 4.29
So. Lehigh Rank Avgs. 4.71
Quakertown Rank Avgs. 4.79
Saucon Valley Rank Avgs. 4.86
Salisbury Rank Avgs. 6.14
East Penn Rank Avgs. 6.93
Pennridge Rank Avgs. 7.14
NW Lehigh Rank Avgs. 8.21
Nazareth Rank Avgs. 9.29
Upper Perk Rank Avgs. 10.43
Pen Argyl Rank Avgs. 13.29
Whitehall-Coplay Rank Avgs. 13.36
Northampton Rank Avgs. 13.57
Catasauqua Rank Avgs. 13.79
Wilson Rank Avgs. 14.50
Northern Lehigh Rank Avgs. 14.86
Bangor Rank Avgs. 17.57
Bethlehem Rank Avgs. 18.21
Easton Rank Avgs. 18.50
Allentown Rank Avgs. 20.86

As you can see, my analysis very closely matches the PBT school rankings.
