UN Homes Evacuated - Bomb Squad Called In

The Morning Call reports (read it here) that 20 Upper Nazareth homes were evacuated when a family, going through items of a deceased family member who was a veteran of WWII, found a grenade with a pin in it.

Police were contacted, who summoned the Bethlehem Bomb Squad.  It was not known if the grenade was live or not.  The grenade was removed and people allowed to return to their homes.

Thank You Bill White - Library Card Summary & Review

I’ve tried time and again to explain/articulate why the Nazareth Library was not at fault as it related to the library card of one young Tatamite.

Bill White has a column (read it here) on the entire saga and rightly sums it up by saying:

So let's review. All of you can visit the Nazareth library as often as you want. Dominick can check books out of there until the end of the year, then must switch to Palmer. No one did anything wrong here, except maybe Tatamy for undervaluing the importance of a library.

The entire column was well-thought out, factually correct, and simply stated – thanks Bill!

Officer Terminated - Court Date Missed

According to the Express-Times (read it here) and the Morning Call (read it here) the Nazareth Borough Council and Police Department decided not to retain officer Jason Gabriel following his one year probationary period on Monday.  After being notified on Monday, Gabriel returned to the station on Tuesday to turn in items and learned that he had missed a court date that day.  Without his testimony, the DA office attorney chose to plea-bargain.

The case was against Donald Pysher, who was charged with beating and choking his girlfriend, pleaded guilty to two counts that could get him up to 2 years in prison each compared to the 20 years he could have gotten if convicted of the original charges that were not a part of the plea-bargain.

The Express-Times article notes:

Borough Mayor Earl Keller said he felt the force was covered when Officer Jacob Abel, who also responded to the call, was sent to court, but Assistant District Attorney Jackie Taschner felt she needed Gabriel's testimony to proceed.

Both daily newspapers’ headlines appear to me to indicate the officer failed to appear in retaliation for being terminated, but this quote seems to indicate as the officer noted, he wasn’t informed by the department that he was to be in court for the case.

I can’t argue for the quality of the officer’s work, but it seems wrong that the woman who was allegedly assaulted never got the trial she wanted as a result of this.

Nazareth Library Responds to Colbert Report

The Nazareth Library has posted a letter regarding the story/spoof on the Colbert Report.  The spoof was based on an article that appeared in the Express-Times and both included inaccuracies that have been spread as fact leading some area residents to be upset with the Library, its staff and leadership.

How Much Money Do You Drive Around With?

When you leave the house you often make sure you have a few dollars on hand, but with rewards programs and points, more often than not I just use a debit or credit card anymore.

I assumed this was typical behavior until I read about Keith Eutsay, 33 of Nazareth, who had over $125,000 in his vehicle when police stopped him for suspected drunken driving on Friday night.  As police approached the car, according to the report in the Express-Times (read it here), they saw Eutsay throwing marijuana from the vehicle.  Once they arrested him, Eutsay noted there was a large amount of money in the vehicle.  When it was searched, police found over $125,000 in cash, marijuana, and counterfeit money.

DNA Match Solves Case

Both the Morning Call (read it here) and The Express-Times (read it here) report that Colonial Regional Police used DNA to find the man responsible for a smash and grab robbery at a Freeman Jewelers in 1996.

A man rushed into the store wielding a sledge hammer, smashed open cases, and left with over fifty items valued at over $37,000.  He left the sledge hammer on which police found blood.  The DNA did not indicate a match at the time, however, more recently a match did show up and police went to North Carolina to issue a warrant.

Martin on Main - A Visitor's Perspective

I came across a post on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum by Todd Stuart Phillips, which gives a tremendous perspective to the ends enthusiasts go to in order to be a part of this past weekend’s activities (read his weekend recap here).

He mentions the myriad of fans from across the country he played, spoke with and met, as well the guitar each one played.

While many of us were able to enjoy the day long festival, our guests were on a pilgrimage and Phillips does a great job relaying the experience.

Thanks to everyone who worked to put on this event and to those who attended!

Bushkill Man Charged with Possessing Child Porn

The Express-Times reports (read the article here) that a Bushkill man was charged with possessing child pornography.

A complaint in late January that the individual had taken improper pictures of a nine year old led to a search warrant, which resulted in finding video of two under-age girls, half naked splashing in a pond. Police seized computers, video equipment, and DVD's.

The 44 year old, Harold Moser, had previously been charged with receiving a stolen handgun, endangering the welfare of children, and corruption of children.
