NASD Tax Increase

The NASD voted to increase taxes again this year according to an article in the Express-Times (read it here).

The 2.5% increase is the maximum according to the district, which is looking at some potential cuts to the proposed budget and doesn’t yet know what state aid or county assessments are set at for next year.

Last month, the district was looking at either a 1.7 or 2.5% hike, and they chose to go with the larger increase.

As reported here previously, the $68.8 million dollar budget is $20 million more than what we needed to educate the same number of students between five and six years ago (one year’s enrollment was just above the other just below next year’s).

You can read more about the budget and budget history here.

Both reported that there was a sole dissenting vote on the prelininary budget that's calling for a possible tax increase.

What both neglected to say, and what should have been headline material...

Sole dissenting school board member calls the preliminary budget ***"smoke and mirrors"***
-Board director, ***treasurer***, and ***certified public accountant*** Thomas K. Maher ....

The ***parts*** are the pertinent statements that were left out of the news accounts.

Make a big difference in the story IMHO
